best book on discipline

My 3 1/2 year old's behavior is unbearable.  Temper tantrum and whining galore since I had a baby 2 months ago.  As an educator and parent, I try to discipline and give appropriate reinforcement.  Can you recommend a really good book on disciplining or a book that might help us?  Thank you!!!

  • I've read Positive Discipline from A to Z and 123 Magic. I liked Positive Discipline because it provides solutions to specific scenarios. I wasn't a fan of 123 Magic because it seemed to me like a "do what I say just because I say so" type of philosophy, which isn't for me.

  • What Fred Said.  Friend or Enemy is a painful read (awful writing)but frankly was what made me relax about my head-spinning, crazy OCD wild 3.  I was convinced my sweet mild-mannered child inherited every mental illness in our family histories when she was 3.  Good luck!

  • Oh my! Let me just say that reading this is not making me feel too good about DS turning 3 soon with another due soon! :-)

I'll also add that I didn't care for 123 Magic- at least not at this stage with DS. In some areas of the book it even says that it doesn't really apply as well to 2 and 3 year olds, and that you have to do whatever to deal with a tantrum.

Love & Logic is on my reading list.

  • Hi -- lurker from school aged kids. I like Parenting with Love and Logic.  It's very compatible with how I do things, but it doesn't give you a consistent "trick" like 1-2-3 Magic, so I think for some people it can be hard to put into practice.  I have a friend whose son went through a really rough patch around age 5, and she swears by 1-2-3!  It really helped her turn things around with her son.

FWIW, when my son was toddler/preschool age, I felt like he was a breeze at age 2.  He was my mellow little buddy.  About 2 months before he turned 3, that changed.  He turned into a bizarre-o mix of anxious/clingy/whiny and aggressive/defiant.  It was tough, and it lasted until he was about 3 1/2 before these behaviors began to taper off.
