Success after IF

XP: Anti-Anxiety Meds during IVF/Pregnancy

Hi ladies ~ I'm currently in the middle of my first IVF cycle (due to start stims tomorrow) and I am struggling with a lot of anxiety. I have always been an anxious person - I used to take an anti-anxiety medication, but stopped it a couple of years ago when we started TTC. I have been doing fine without it until I started the IVF meds. Now I am constantly worrying about anything IVF related.

Did any of you take an anti-anxiety medication during IVF? If so, did you stop it once you found out you were pregnant or did you continue taking it? If it's safe and my doctor approves of it I am thinking that I should take something, because I'm going crazy with all of my anxiety over IVF!

Thanks in advance!

  • Well, there are different types of anxiety meds. The ones you take only when you are experiencing anxiety like Xanax, Klonopin, other benzos, etc. tend to not be very good to take if you end up getting pregnant.  But there are others that are safer.  If I were in your shoes, I would go see a psychiatrist and get their opinion on what is the safest to take.

Really, though, I would not worry about anything that you take up until either transfer or ovulation. I think most of those things have pretty short half lives. But I would stead clear of the benzos after O or transfer.  Just my two cents. Take it with a chunk of salt, though.  I would guess a psychiatrist would be the best to talk to this about.

  • I took Zoloft because it is one of the safer meds for pregnancy & lactation. I weaned myself to a low doses & after I got my first beta weaned off over the course of like a week. You don't have to, lots of women take it during pregnancy. Its going to help you more if you are relaxed I think. I was able to stay off until I gave birth but went right back on the day I came home from the hospital because I was having panic attacks from the fatigue. You can take benzo's (xanax, ativan, etc) short term while you are doing the cycle if you just need to relax & sleep but I would not after the ET. GL.
