Just come rip my nipples off

Leo seems to think that this is appropriate. Latch. Bite. Pull hard. Rinse and repeat. My poor nips

  • I'll join the club. I nicknamed my LO "chum" because she makes this face that reminds me of the movie poster for jaws. She comes at me like a great white.

  • Yes, my LO loves to let me get her situated with a good latch, then vigorously shake her head and pull back to her preferred shallow latch.

  • My LO has a good latch but if she doesn't get it fast enough she shakes her head quickly and sometimes grunts like a pig. It's hard to laugh and get her on correctly then!

I started getting very sore and have been rubbing expressed milk and lanolin after every feeding and it really helped me with the pain. It's worth the extra minute or two to take care of yourself!
  • I used to call DD1 the piranha.  :(

  • Yep right there with you ladies. I've been calling DD munchie because she loves to just gum me on the right side. It doesn't matter if I start her on the right side or the left whenever she is latched on the rightbshevseems to just be nibbling
  • We switched holds and that helped. We went from cross cradle to football.
  • I'm not looking forward to this. My nipples are already so sore and LO isn't even here yet. :(
  • As I read this DS just tightened his latch and then pulled his head back. Ow!!!!

Okay I literally laughed out loud at this. But yes my LO does an angry suck where he will be feeding for awhile, let go, and then go in angry and suck super hard. I have no idea why he does it but it makes me laugh because he grunts while he does it. Babies are too funny!
  • My DD does this as well. Kudos to all you who are able to laugh. All I can do is by my lip and try not to yelp in pain. My nips are still healing from some wicked cracking.

  • I love all of the nicknames! My LO likes to use her hands. Ill have to think of a grabby, food shoveling character to nick name her! ;) I keep saying to her "we don't eat with our hands".

I'm in the pain club too. I had my first break down cry last night. I may have to invest in these shields you speak of. But it seams after a shower they are fine. Sometimes though...the pain is unbearable! Worse than my contractions.

@MrsMooney thank you for the tips :) I did call my LC and got a lot of help. I had the lanolin and was putting it on after every feeding but it was actually making it worse for me. I didn't know that I should have let them dry off first. I was just slathering it right on when LO was done. Now, I just dab some breast milk on them and let them air dry before covering them. If they're still painful ill use a little lanolin but its been working really well. I was also using breast pads and keeping them on all the time. In my mind I thought you should keep them covered but that was wrong too. Turns out I was doing everything wrong and LO's latch was perfect.

My hospital has a support group for breast feeding on Monday so I'm going to that. Ill try to football hold though and see if there's a difference.

Thank you for your insight :)
  • Mine nips are so raw & cracked that I pumped what looked like strawberry Nesquick tonight. That was fun.

  • I'm in the same boat. DD was nicknamed "the snapping turtle" at the hospital because she would open her mouth wide, but as soon as my nipple got close she would snap her mouth shut. Im using coconut oil instead of lanolin because I'm pretty sure it contributed to thrush with DS.

  • I feel y'all on the pain. It does seem to be getting better but the first couple days after I took away the nipple shield were horrible. One time I just burst into tears as soon as he started. Now if I could just get him to go shield free 100% of the time. He will usually take the nipple directly but every once in a while he just refuses it until I put that dumb shield on.

  • You have to buy the nipple shields! They are my life savers I also started pumping !
  • So when are you supposed to wear the breast pads if not all the time? I'm going to have to try the shields :(

I guess only when you might leak. I've been keeping them on and that was wrong so I really don't know. But they are more of a just in case thing than a necessity. At least that's how I perceived the advice I was given.
