Favorite Toys for 3yr Olds?

I'm thinking ahead to my daughter's 3rd birthday and wanted to ask for some recommendations. I'd like to get her some board games but not sure which ones are best at this age. Her bday is the end of October so indoor play ideas would be great... I appreciate any input!

I bought a few games for DD's 3rd birthday.  The only ones that she liked at that time were Elefun and Busytown Eye Found it game.  It took another six months before she got into Candyland, Memory, and Chutes and Ladders.  I highly recommend Busytown!

Other things that she got that she loves- her dress up clothes and her bike with training wheels.  She has also recently gotten into electronic games on our tablet.  There are a bunch of educational apps available.  She liked her doll house for a little while but I think we bought too young of one because she lost interest in it quickly and seems to have her eye on the older girls doll houses now (she has the my first dollhouse, it was what she really wanted at the time).

  • Ds will be 3 this fall. Loves anything he can climb into and drive, balls of all sorts. His trains, anything pretend or make believe. Still loves train table.

    Totally checking out pp recs!!!
  • Puzzles, where's Waldo books, sticker books, doll strollers, pretend food, squinkies, little people princesses
  • match box cars, puzzles, where's waldo and any other search and find book, art easel, play kitchen with food (if she already has this apron, oven mitts additional supplies to go in kitchen), play house for backyard (can usually find on craigslist for a decent price), stringing toys to work on fine motor, snap cubes, legos, books, art supplies, balance bike or tricycle, t-ball set, basketball hoop.

We haven't really played any board games except candyland.  He's good at memory type games too.

  • Thanks so much for all the ideas!

I'm definitely going to make her a dress-up box, but was planning to shop the Halloween costume sales and hold on to everything for Christmas.

Some additions to her play kitchen would be a great idea, I feel like she's getting a little bored with it so maybe some new accessories will make it fun again? Any favorites?

I think I'll take it easy with the board games since they sound like they're hit or miss. I'll grab her just a couple and see how it goes. Can always add more to her Christmas list if they're a hit, right? But thanks for the puzzle suggestions! She is definitely grown out of her old peg puzzles and could use a few new "real" puzzles!

  • I agree with the board game suggestions - Sequence, Busytown, Chutes and Ladders and Sneaky Snacky Squirrel are all hits over here with my now 3 year old (we got them when he was 2.5).  We recently got Tegu blocks and Magnatiles as well - these are great for building and creating 3d puzzles as they contain magnets on their ends.  I have noticed that a lot of preschools have Magnatiles as well - think they are a universal hit!
