Babies: 6 - 9 Months

The After Vacation Baby

So I got back three days ago from an out of country vacation with my 6 month old. During the time we were away, we stayed in a couple of different hotels, and at relatives houses. Sometimes my LO was in a crib (which is what he sleeps in at home), sometimes in the bed. He adapted quite well, the only "off" sign was he was waking up frequently at night (he'd previously been a sttn baby).

Now that we're back home, he has consistently been waking up at 11:30 and 2:30 every night. Also, his happy go-lucky personality is off. He doesn't have nearly as much interest in his toys, his patience is very limited (he'll scream angrily/in frustration at the smallest thing), and he is very clingy. This is very much not the same guy I left with on vacation.

Is he just re-adjusting after being away so long? Could it be a growth spurt? Teething? Sick? All of the above? :) I know no one can know for sure, but I guess what I'm wondering is, has anyone had a similar experience? Tell me about it and give me hope that this is just temporary!

Re: The After Vacation Baby

  • I used to only rock him back to sleep pre-vacation. Now, unfortunately, that doesn't seem to soothe him. I caved in while away and would nurse him back to sleep, but now I fear this has become a habit.

You're probably right about the crankiness. Hopefully he'll be back to "normal" as soon as our routine solidifies again.

  • I'm kind of hoping a growth spurt is what's going on, as my guy has never been such a cranky pants before. He's also drooling a lot, so maybe I'm getting a double dose of fun:)

In other moms experience, how long did the 6 month growth spurt/associates crankiness last?
  • It could be all of the above or it could be one of the above. What I promise you is it is just a phase. By the time you figure out what was wrong something new will occur and then that phase too will pass on.

  • my LO did the same thing after our LA to NY trip last month.  his fussiness and night wakings went back to normal after a week so i'm thinking it was jetlag/time change related.   we are on another east coast/west coast trip now so i'm curious to see how he acts when we are back home tomorrow.

  • Poppyc8- let me know what happens! We've been back just over a week now, and things are slllllowly getting back to normal. The fussiness has definitely gone away, though he still wakes up twice a night.
