weird cramp under my rib area

I am 38weeks and 4 days today and last night was telling my girlfriends how I'm nervous to be checked at my ob appt this afternoon (I'm a weirdo when it comes to paps, so I think I have more anxiety about being checked than the actual labour and delivery part). Some ppl have told me its extremely uncomfortable and others say it's nothing. Anyways, last night I was saying I feel like I don't need to be checked because I don't think anything is happening yet. Well maybe I jinxed myself but when I got into bed last night I had some brief cramping. Then this morning I have this awful uncomfortable feeling just underneath my ribs. The only way I can think to describe it is that it feels kind of like I ate a massive Thanksgiving dinner, even though I have only had a bowl of cheerios, the only way I can get even remotely comfortable is if I am stretched out.

I guess I am just wondering if anyone has this same kind of feeling, I am obviously going to ask my ob about it in a few hours, just thought I would ask on here in the mean time.

Re: weird cramp under my rib area

  • Yes. Normal. I have had this since about 26 weeks. It is her butt, in my ribs. On top of that, she is also pinching a nerve there that makes the whole area topically numb. Oh and I get shooting pains from it down towards my belly button every once in a while. OB said totally normal that some motrin would clear it right up... if I weren't pregnant and could take motrin. How nice of her! I find that the pain is worst at night when belly is not well propped up on a pillow, so now I wedge the heck out of it with literally 7 pillows all around me and I can get comfortable enough to get 3 hours of sleep before I have to pee again. At least yours only started now. Mention it at your appointment, but I doubt they'll stress about it.

  • Oh wow, I sure am thankful mine is just starting, you're a trooper! Oh that's nice of her to tell you about the Motrin. I cannot wait to see the look on my husbands face when I tell him I need more pillows in bed, hahaha. Thanks for giving me an idea what it could be!
  • I am happy to know I'm not the only one experiencing this feeling! Thank you and I hope I share the same opinion as you after my check is done!
  • I get that really uncomfortable feeling with Braxton Hicks sometimes. It makes my belly hard so the pushing against my ribs is more uncomfortable than when it's soft and squishy. Otherwise, I pretty much don't feel the BH (though sometimes they have a cramp-y feeling with them)

Also, my check didn't hurt. It was a little uncomfortable since the midwife had to reach up and push down on baby at the same time, but it wasn't painful at all, and I didn't have any cramping after (but I did have a tiny bit of extra discharge streaked with a bit of pink for the day).

    We're one and done!
  • My ob said that it is caused by the position the baby is in, and it could also be from eating too large of a meal (which couldn't be my situation as when I woke up this morning I hadn't eaten in over 12 hours). She said to try going for a short walk around the block. I have had Braxton Hicks for quite a few weeks now and it has never felt like this.

My check was not nearly as awful as I anticipated in my head, I actually felt silly for being so anxious about it.
