Hi Ladies,
Anyone out there given their child Periactin to increase appetite? DS is almost 21 months and weighs 20 lbs. He seems healthy and is super active but he hardly eats anything. He tends to go in spurts where he'll eat semi decently for about a week then very poorly for weeks. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him medically. The doctor wants to put him on Periactin to increase his appetite. I'd just like to know if it worked for your child, how long he/she was on it, and what side effects did you notice. Thanks for anyone who can help!
Re: Periactin to increase appetite/weight
DD is 19.5months and weighs 21lbs. From birth until 15months we received a lot of flack from our pediatrician about her weight and we finally decided to see a new Dr for her 15month appt. I am so glad I did! DD has stayed on the same growth curve since birth which means she is perfectly healthy, just a thin built person.
If I were in your shoes, I would without doubt be talking to another Dr or 2 before giving Periactin.
Thanks ladies, we really don't want to give him Periactin. You all seem to feel the same as DH and I. I was just trying to see if there was anyone out there who did choose to give it to their child and what their thoughts are about it should it come to that. It's not easy to get a second doctor's opinion because we have an HMO and they don't regularly let you schedule appointments with other doctors. I'm sure I could get around this though. His current doctor is going to have blood work ran again (nothing came back last time) and have his thyroid and kidneys checked.
I don't think he's just genetically skinny because he doesn't eat very much. I'd be fine with him being this weight and being a skinny kid if I saw that he was eating plenty of food with some regularity.
DS has not been on the same growth curve since birth, he dropped dramatically around 6 months. On the growth chart he's been around what he is now (or lower) for a very long time. In late June when he was still 20 lbs (diff ounces) he was at 4.58 percentile.
