Thrush or vasospam?

Posted on the breastfeeding board as well.
I've been getting sharp pains in my lower right breast, below the nipple in the actual breast itself, for several weeks now. I'm 8wks pp. I mentioned this at my 6 wk pp visit and the NP didnt seem concerned or even examine the area so I didnt think too much of it. The last few days though I've been having a lot more pain, both my nipples turn white after pumping so I was thinking it might be vasospasm but I also have a small white dot on my right nipple too so I'm also thinking maybe it could be thrush? I was on antibiotics after I gave birth due to a bladder infection. I'd hate to think it was yeast and have to throw out all the frozen milk I stashed for LO's daycare so I'm hoping it's not that but I think it might be. Anyone have any insight? It's the right breast only that hurts but both nipples get white.
Also, LO's 2 month appointment is on Monday. Should I wait and ask her dr, who is also my pcp, or should I seek advice from my OB or find a LC?

  • I've been dealing with thrush for 6 weeks and my nipples are bright bright pink, which is telltale yeast. The white dot could be a milk bleb?
    Even if it is thrush, no need to throw away your pumped milk.

    @AmyG* can probably help.

    If you're in pain, definitely see a LC. It's not normal to have persistent pain like that. The one white dot could be a clogged duct, but I can't say for sure. I hope you get it figured out soon!

    This is what I was thinking. The clogged duct has happened to me twice and it always presents itself with a white bump.
  • I am also dealing with the same issue and am not sure which one it is or if it's both. I'm going to see my LC today to rule out latch issues and see if she can figure out what it is before I head to the doctor. I'll update this thread when I get back!

  • I had thrush and was treated for it. For me I had white lines along my nipples. Also feeding was sooooooo painful.  I dreaded every time DD wanted to eat.  Everything that touched me hurt: bras, shirts, towels, water and cold air. Since being treated for a while, I only have the pain every now and then, which I have found through a pp that a lot of women have (the pain).  I tried a lot of remedies and found relief with a compound from my OB.  DD was cleared with Nystatin.  My OB and the ped have agreed that they do not see signs of thrush in either of us, but I still have very pink nipples like you ladies have described.

  • We just finished treatment for thrush on Tuesday, it was soo painful to feed her and my boobs felt like they were on fire! I was given cream and DD was given Diflucan. I feel better however now I notice white spots and don't know whether to call the Dr or not. I really want it to clear up so I can start pumping for my stash! Lets see, hopefully we all get rid of it!!
