Cup troubles.... Suggestions please!

We are having an awful time getting DS to drink from any sort of a cup. He loves to take sips from our glass but it just really dribbles all over him. So, I know he's interested in drinking but he just can't seem to understand the concept of sucking or tipping a cup himself.

We've tried a variety of different straw cups... he just chews on the straw. I even bought a cup that has a nipple "like" top.. rubber but much wider and flatter than an actual bottle nipple.. and the same thing, even when I tip it for him, he just chews on it. He never actually closes his lips around it.

The biggest challenge this is causing is that we want to transition him from formula to milk but he's started refusing his bottle.... he literally will only take a bottle when he first wakes up... NOTHING else during the day, and he won't drink from a cup. I'm at a loss as to how transition him to milk when he can't drink from a cup and he won't take a bottle anymore. Plus, he's not getting the liquids (or nutrition) he should be when he only take 6-7 oz a day!

Any suggestions??

I used born free bottles and they make a soft spout cup that is great for transition. You can find it online or at BRU. After that I would get the NUBY cup with the handles. You can find that at BRU or Buy Buy Baby.

My son did the same thing! It took about 3 weeks before he finally took to the straw cup. Now, two months after we started, he is now drinking happily from all sorts of cups and tipping them himself. It just takes a while. Stick with it. Unless you notice that he is getting dehydrated, I would keep offering only the cup. We did cups only during the day and once he took to something we did away with morning and night time bottles. He will get there. Also, how old is he? Our pedi. told us that for some reason boys do have a harder time with it and often don't complete the transition until 18 months.

This sounds a lot like my son. Basically, he will only take a bottle from his grandmother who watches him during the day. He will not take a bottle from anyone else. He associates me with breastfeeding, which is part of the issue, but we haven't BF in a month now. He won't take sippy cups either. So I can only get him to drink with a glass or a water bottle (normal water bottle adults use) which I hold for him. I am very concerned about his intake of liquids as well. He seems to never be thirsty and pushes the cup or water bottle away a lot of the time. He actually has started showing a little more interest in the straw sippy cups during the last week. He will try using it maybe 2x a week. I offer it to him constantly though. It is just frustrating because you can't make them drink. I have also tried all sorts of sippy cups but it doesn't matter the type. I plan on asking my pedi about this dilema.

have you tried a cup like a tupperware sippy cup? The take alongs with the spouts? They "dribble" liquid out - also my LO would only take water (ice water was her fav - as she liked to hear the ice shake inside) - for a long time.. then suddenly - it clicked and she'll take milk

My DD also loved the Nuk cups at first.

You can skip sippys and just try open cups. Get something small, like a plastic shot glass and let him try water with that. Don't worry about him tipping it all over at first.
