What do I need?!

I'm trying to put together a budget to decide if I can afford to quit my job when the twins are born. I have to make a decision pretty soon, and I'm starting to freak out. My problem is that I have no idea how to budget for a baby (much less two), mostly because I have no idea what I need. I'm not concerned about toys and clothes and stuff; I am assuming that diapers and formula will be my two biggest recurring expenses. (I have already decided that I will try to breastfeed but due to some medical and other logistical issues, I think the babies will be heavily supplemented with formula). But how do I know how MANY diapers and how MUCH formula I'll need for two babies per month? Can anyone tell me, or point me to any reputable sources? I'm so sick of looking at random internet sites...I can't tell which ones are trustworthy anymore!

Re: What do I need?!

  • You need more diapers and less formula in the beginning. At the peak of each we probably used about 550-600 diapers in a month, now we're down to about 250-300. At the peak of formula we were going through a 1.45lb container of Similac Advance about every 2 to 2.5 days. Formula cost can vary if you have a preemie or reflux/allergy issues.

  • 8-12 diapers a day in the beginning is average for newborns. (Per baby) For us it went down to about 5-6 diapers a day by ... 4-6 months? Somewhere in there.

For formula, like pp said they won't need a ton in the beginning but my boys drank (each) 32-36 oz/day of formula for a good chunk of the first year.

  • My girls drink 3-4 ounces every 3 hours and they are 5 weeks, we go through about 18-20 diapers a day. Check with your insurance company about formula if you have a medical readon from your doctor you may be coverd , we were covered 100%, can't hurt to ask! Don't get too many bottles right away , we spent a ton on tommy tippee they hated them, they love the cheep gerber essentials. Ask mothers in your area we have a store called once upon a baby near us that buys and sells very gently used clothing and baby equipment. It is a great resource for things you will only use for a while and you never know what your baby will like.
