Stay at Home Moms

Questions about LOs and travelling/hotels

Okay, we will be taking DD (15 months) with us to find an apartment in our new city. It will be her first time sleeping away from home and first time in a hotel. I have some questions that are probably really dumb:

What does your LO sleep in? Do you bring a pack and play? I just feel like the bottom of the pack and play is so hard. I feel like it will be uncomfortable. Do hotels provide cribs? Have you used them?

What do you do about WCM? I am assuming alot of restaurants don't have it. Do you just make sure to get a hotel with a fridge and buy some? Any other suggestions about foods? I am a little worried about making sure that we can get stuff DD will eat that will still be healthy even though we aren't at home. I feel like maybe this won't be as difficult as I think and I am worrying too much about it. I am sure she won't eat quite at healthy and well rounded as at home but I don't want everything to go out the window, you know?

Any other tips for our first hotel stay/road trip?

Re: Questions about LOs and travelling/hotels

  • When the kids were that little, we always looked for a Homewood Suites or Embassy Suites or something with a small kitchen. That way we had a fridge and a microwave and could stock whatever we needed.

My kids had the Baby Bjorn travel crib, not a PNP, but I can't imagine the mattress was any softer. They always did fine. I never got a hotel crib, I didn't trust them.

  • If we drive we bring the pack n play. I pad the mattress with a quilt. The one time I used a hotel "crib" it was actually a pack n play.

Usually restaurants have 1 or 2% milk and I give that to DD.

  • When we travel with DS we usually make sure wherever we stay the room is a suite or at least has a fridge and microwave so we can get some milk to keep in the room. Most restaurants I have been to have 1% or 2% milk, it might not be whole milk but its milk so it's nbd to me. And I'm always able to piece together a healthy meal at restaurants for DS. A lot of restaurants now have healthy options included in their kids menu. Like grilled chicken, steamed veggies, fruits, etc. if not Ill get a few sides and then cut up some chicken, steak or whatever protein we have for him.

I've also never used a hotel crib for DS. Up until he was around a year we just took his PNP with us and he would sleep in there. After that he didn't sleep that good in it, can't blame the kid the boards are soo hard and I am sure uncomfortable. So now when we travel he sleeps in bed with me.

  • Thanks all for all the advice. We will definitely get a suite with a fridge and probably bring our own pack and play. I will probably put a quilt in the bottom of it too. Good suggestion.
  • We've always taken a PNP.  I'd order milk at restaurants or buy some to keep in the hotel.  A coffee shop would usually have a variety of milk if you happen to see one.

We also did Gerber Graduates ravioli when DD1 was little.  I carried that and a fruit cup with me in case I needed it.  It came in handy once when we were stranded at the airport (okay, they put us up in a hotel with no luggage for the night).
  • You are over worrying :@) !!

What!? Me? Over worry?! Never! ;)
  • We just did a week in San Diego and only took our stroller.  We did use public transit or walk so a car seat wasn't needed.  The hotel had a pnp, I always call and check first, but DH and I are ok with her sleeping with us if it means we all get some sleep (or of course the pnp is unsafe).  I put a blanket over the mattress and call it a night.  I do prefer to have a fridge, but it's not a deal breaker.  I bring/buy some veggie pouches (gasp!) and fresh fruit along to supplement her meals/snacks and then order carefully off the menu when we go out.  I find the breakfast bars are pretty good most places.  Toast with peanut butter and a banana and she's a happy kid.  I also took a disposible coffee cup and filled it with cheerios and raisons for a snack later in the morning (call me a thief if you want).  I don't worry about WCM when we travel as long as she's getting milk.  If you're truly concerned, I think New Horizon milk makes a shelf stable pack of 'milk boxes' (like juice boxes with milk).
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I haven't stayed at a hotel yet that didn't have a crib available for "rent."  They are usually either the old school metal rail cribs or a pnp.  I have only been to one hotel that has given us more than a fitted sheet - so if your child is used to a blanket bring one.

The hotels that we stay at always have a continental breakfast and they have always had whole milk.  They have always been really good at getting me some milk for the kids prior to bed also.  You could get a suite with a fridge also - a half gallon can usually fit well in the mini fridges.  I have bought the Horizon milk boxes on long road trips since they don't need to be refrigerated.

  • Socialworkgirl Lurker butting in...They make mattresses for PNPs. I bought one for the one and only time we've traveled with LO (we'll be doing it again next week).

I also just purchased a portable booster seat for the same trip and also if we're going to a friend's house during mealtime.

  • Lurker here, but I saw your post and wanted to share what works for my son. The PnP mattress is really uncomfortable and he wasn't sleeping well in it. I bought an egg crate mattress cover, cut it to fit over the PnP mattress, and use a crib sheet. Works great and my son slept really well I our last trip.
