Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Bedtime

What time does your LO go down the "the night"? I know sleep is scattered all day and night at this age, but at what point do you consider it nighttime for them vs. daytime sleep. I forget everything about what I did before, and I know all babies are different but just wondering what people do. I read the Sleep Lady book and she suggests at this age to keep babies up the 2 hours prior to bedtime and put them down around 10 or 11 if possible, giving them one last feeding before you go to bed. I have been feeding DS around 11 then going to bed, but there is no way he can stay up that late. He is falling asleep around 9:00 after I feed him and then I just do sort of a dream feed before putting him in his crib. Only issue is, I think he is still a bit confused about day/ night because after his night feedings he seems wide awake about 50% of the time. Anyways, just wondering what others are doing. Anyone else with an LO around this age who goes to bed earlier? TIA!

My lo is 9 weeks, since 6 weeks she eats around 8, then plays and usually falls asleep on one of our laps, at 9:30 we get her undressed an do bath time, then a bottle at ten, rock her in dark room so she usually is asleep by ten thirty.. Eleven. She sleeps til 5-7 Edit: note we talked to pedi about moving bedtime earlier and he told me if I mess with her schedule I'm crazy since she is sleeping so well, and just to watch her cues )

When DS was a month old, he went down for the night between 9 and 10. It slowly moved up,earlier and earlier as he got bigger. At a month he definitely wasn't awake for two hours straight before bed or really much ever! But I always made sure to feed him before putting him in his crib for the night. A that point we were getting a 3-4 hour stretch from him when we first put him down.

  • Ya the 2 hour window is nuts at this age, I even remember my older DS couldn't do 2 hours until he was closer to 5-6 months. DS is bf'd and can go about 4hours as his first stretch... It's just then he thinks its party time lol.

  • I agree. The 2 hr thing is one of the sleep lady things I don't like.. However the book does say to watch sleep cues and all babies are different, but I just don't remember what time my older son started going to bed earlier, without doing a dream feed.

  • I feed them arpund 5, around 7, and around 9. 9pm is when we go into nighttime mode.

Sometimes they'll wake at 1 to eat, other times not until 4.

They eat 7x a day. We bf.

  • LO is only a month old, so she follows our "bedtime". She eats every 2 hours, but after her 10 o'clock feeding we consider it bedtime. That is when she starts her long stretch of sleep, too (for now).

  • Oh wow my LO goes to sleep way earlier than that. So do we. We do bath at 6, swaddle and feed baby goes to sleep at 8, wake up at 1 to feed then 5 then 7. Sometimes if he's really cranky he goes to sleep at 7. My husband and I go to sleep early too. He wakes up at 3 am for work so we have always gone to sleep early.
  • Ya well I guess the idea is even though they are still sleeping periodically all evening, that you give them a last feed before your bedtime, so if you like to go to bed around 10, then maybe they'll sleep until 2 instead of putting them down at 8, and going to bed at 11 yourself then they wake an hour later at midnight, kwim? If you go to bed earlier too that would work, but my older son isn't in bed until 8, so I need some down time after her goes to bed.

  • My 7 week old gets very tired around 6 so I feed and put him down no later than 7. He doesn't wake up until 3ish and then again around 5. He's up for the day around 6:30. As for naps, he refuses to take them. I spend 70% of my day trying to get him to nap. It is exhausting!
  • Starting almost right away, LO has gone to bed for the night around 8.  At first sometimes it may have been closer to 9 if he wasn't sleepy and now sometimes it's as early as 7:30.

  • Only in this past week have we really started a schedule with DD (who is 9 weeks tomorrow). 7-730 is when we start bath time and the last feeding. By 8ish she's asleep. Sometimes she's been up for 5-6 hours at that point (NOT by my choice or doing...DH says she's wide awake and refuses to sleep, but she's not fussy so I let it go). She was sleeping until 1am, but last night we did the double swaddle and she slept until 3am. Feed and back to sleep until 5am for another feed. It seems like no matter when she goes to bed or how many times she eats she wants to eat around the same times during the night.

  • We try to get them down at about 8p or 9p.  I pump at 7p and by the time I finish pumping and washing and doing the last few things before bed, I hit the pillow around 8-830p while H is hopefully finishing up getting them settled in.
