Getting into trouble.

I like to buy things for baby if I see clearance or a big sale. And now my family is getting mad at me for doing so, anyone else in the same boat? It's like they are trying to make me feel guilty!

edit- its bc they claim they meant to buy it.

Re: Getting into trouble.

  • My MIL nagged and nagged me into creating a registry, I thought I a handle on things, but I clearly wasn't putting enough into it. Lets just say I have the mentality of "if I can't afford it and can live without it, then I don't need it." She insisted the family (and her friends that I don't even know) should be the ones responsible for making sure I not only have the needs, but also the nice to haves.

  • Yes!!!! I am in the very same boat!! We currently live in my parents house (just for this last month before we take our new orders and move) and I have taken to hiding EVERYTHING that we
buy because I get yelled at every time we purchase something because my mother says we should wait until after the shower because people are really excited for us! So we have slowed down but like many others, I am a registry stalker and only 8 things have been purchased and my shower is this weekend. I could care less about these gifts (honestly) but it does kind of frustrate me that she has stopped
us from buying things and I doubt we will get the things we actually need, when we could have been stock piling the whole time. And yes it was almost a huge fight between DH and my mom because they made me feel bad and cry because we wanted to buy OUR SON what he needs! I even got yelled at for purchasing thank you cards! I had to send out a thank you...good Lord just let me be excited!!
  • I have been doing this for awhile now. What strikes me as funny is the people who told me to wait until my showers because I would just have to take everything back. They also told me to make sure my registries were done and had everything I wanted on them. I think I maybe got 15 items off of my registry. I didn't expect people to buy me gifts or buy stuff from my registry but I think it's ironic the people that said that didn't shop from my registry at all. SO I have doubles of stuff that was bought because people didn't use it. Oh well, no biggie. But as a FTM i'm super excited to shop and didn't listen to those people and now i'm really glad I didn't.

  • I haven't had the cash to buy much lately and there really isn't much more we need.  My mom on the other hand....I guess my dad has started physically pulling her out of stores because she just can't stop.  Sad thing is that he doesn't know that when she's out of town for work (which is often), she shops like every night and sends me pictures of what she bought.  I think at this point, my daughter will never wear the same outfit twice.  I'm still trying to figure out what infant needs 4 bathing suits......

I keep teasing FIL he'll never be able to retire if MIL keeps up her shopping habits for DD.

  • Start handing them receipts... tell them they can reimburse you. My dad has a tendency to do things like that. I just started handing him the receipts lol

  • Yep, all the time. We kept getting yelled at for buying the things our son will need. "You should wait until after your shower. You're going to get everything you need from that...etc. etc." Well, the shower has come and gone and people didn't buy much off our registries (that I had to "bulk up" because people were complaining there weren't enough items on them?) I'm appreciative of what we did receive, but people were a little 0-3 clothing focused. Not to mention the duplicates between people not using the registry and Target's registry sucking in general and not posting when something would be purchased. Good thing is I guess is that between all the duplicates of things we had to take back, we got pretty much the rest of what we really need.

People can't resist the cute baby clothes. I say shop until your heart is content! It's your kid! :)

  • We bought most of the big stuff and a lot of the small stuff ourselves... I couldn't help it,I felt like I had to in order to make sure we had it. Then at the shower,we were able to just enjoy the fun things family and friends got her.

    This, with all my in-laws.
  • Yeah, we're dealing with a bit of this too.  The big problem for me is that I'm a bit of a control freak about some things, and it makes me anxious when the "must haves" aren't here yet.  Plus our apartment is small, and crowded, so we're trying to be strategic about adding more junk to it.  I know that people are just wanting to be helpful, and to show us that they love us, but... I mean, you can't nag people for not getting you gifts on your schedule (man, that would be incredibly tacky!) nor can you ask them "whatcha gonna get us?" either.

So if they want to buy us a particular something, they need to tell us, and do it, so we're not left wondering and feeling anxious.  (Bless my husband's aunt, and uncle, and his brother and sister-in-law, who both did that.)

  • I am buying stuff too..if someone pulls the "why don't you wait" card, I'll especially someone close to me like my mom or sister, I'll ask them what they are waiting for if they wanted to get it, go for it!!  Anyways, my shower will forsure be after baby, so I do in fact NEED things that cannot wait until the shower, though I'm trying to hold off on stuff LO doesn't need to give a chance to recieve it at the shower.

My family tends to go the more fun to have, but not necessity route at showers anyways, so I'm expecting to get mostly clothes, hats, blankets, teddies, and not the really must have items anyways.

  • Yeah, sort of. I get the "Wait till after the baby shower" from DH & MIL but if I can find it on sale or in EUC then I'm going to just get it myself. What if someone doesn't get it for me and it's back to regular price???? Pssh, no way, homie don't play that.

  • I have been frequenting the Old Navy clearance section.... lots of goodies for $2.97.... LOVE it. Otherwise most of my kids clothes are from thrift stores or garage sales.
  • I received a lot of gift cards at my showers, so I used them to purchase the a lot of the items I didn't receive. When I do shop, I shop sales....like addictively! Baby clothes are just too cute to pass up!

I don't see the problem with it! I love shopping for my little one.  I do do have a rule though,  it has to be $15 or under.  Or else I would go CRAZY broke.

On a side note, a girl at work gave me a great tip today.  She said to save all of the cash, and gift cards received until after baby is here.  That way I can still have have some spending freedom while on maternity leave.  Just thought I'd share :)

  • It's your baby so you buy what you want!  I wish I had the problem of MIL wanting to buy anything for this baby.  lol.  She's bought him two outfits, they are NB short outfits.  He will not wear them because it will be to cold outside.  When I told her this in a very nice email she took it offensive and claimed I verbaly attacked her.  Whatever!

Oh this one drives me BSC! My mom has been doing that for weeks but yet hasn't actually bought a single thing for LO. Not that she NEEDS to (we are perfectly capable of providing for our LO on our own) but seriously, I'm almost 34w pregnant.  I am not sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for you to buy diapers and bottles that I can afford myself when I have such a short time left before this baby actually will need to wear said diapers.

  • I have done a lot of sale and consignment store shopping for clothes and my husband has been telling me to stop buying things.  Good thing I've picked up a lot of things here and there because we really didn't receive any clothing at our shower.  We were very blessed and received a lot of wonderful things, but I was surprised that we really didn't get any clothing, so I'm glad I had been shopping!
Oh, and my MIL has no interest in buying anything baby.  In fact, she thought that most things on our registry were ridiculous (we don't need them because she raised children without them) or she couldn't believe I picked it out (the cute grey and white elephant sheets, or the 'too busy for baby' brown and white polka dot sheets).  I'm praying she's an excited grandma when our precious baby boy arrives.
  • Mines the opposite. I go to BRU and buy something, then I tell my mom about it and she still goes and buys the same thing from a yard sale and asks me to return what I had already bought. Not gonna happen. I'm a huge fan of yard sales hand me downs and consignment stores, but really mom??
