Sudden Obsession with Pacifier

DS - almost 18 months - has always used pacifiers but never really seemed addicted (for lack of a better word) to them. Mainly, he used them for naps and bedtime and from time to time around the house, in restaurants, etc.  He has learned the word "paci" and now he is obsessed with calling out for his paci and when I try not to give it to him or distract him with something else, it's all out tears.  I thought we'd be getting close to weaning off of them by now and suddenly we've taken a big step backwards!  Any words of wisdom on how to get through this phase and (even better) how to start weaning him off of them? TIA!

Re: Sudden Obsession with Pacifier

  • My little guy is also obsessed with his paci. He doesn't have a stuffed animal or blanket that he likes, so I find him using them ok for now as it is the only thing he has to comfort himself.  I haven't been looking to wean them from him yet.  I do try to limit the time to when he really needs it.  I'm not concerned with him using it, more that he isn't talking when he has it in.

  • Thanks for the responses. It's interesting because this all does seem to coincide with what seems to be a new round of teething.  I'll probably be a little more lenient for now but it looks like I'll have to implement some tough love down the road!
