Trying to Get Pregnant

Ideal Vit D Level for TTC

I know I've posted about this before, but I finally got in for bloodwork and got my results back today. My vitamin D level was 42, and the nurse said that's normal.

I read in my scholarly google research that vitamin D level should be at least 50 in a normal/healthy adult. Does anyone here know what the ideal vitamin D level is for TTC?

The nurse told me I could discontinue vitamin D supplementation, but I'm thinking I'll continue it...and go outside a lot. Lol

Re: Ideal Vit D Level for TTC

  • Here is some info from my test results last year (sorry formatting is wonky).  I was at 21 and says standard is 30-100 (see designations below), so they recommended a supplemented.  I haven't been re-tested but I'm still supplementing.  Of course, I'm also still not pregnant!

  • Neither my primary care doctor nor RE gave me a specific level for TTC. They just said to try to get it (and keep it) within the normal range and cite 32-100ng/mL as optimal. If you're concerned about it I would just call and ask if its ok that you stay on your supplements.

  • Thanks, ladies. Great info. :)

I've been taking a 5000 supplement and I'll plan to continue it until I go for follow-up bloodwork in November. The nurse said I could stop if I wanted to but didn't say there was anything wrong with continuing to supplement.

  • My level was 14 a few weeks ago so the doctor prescribed me a high dose of vit D to take weekly.  I better get it up if it affects TTC.  I have a long way to go!

I have mine done every 6mos at last check I was 15...ugh I take a a presciption 50,000 once a week with an over the counter of 5,000x2 every day. My last check was in Feb so Im hoping my next will have come up since we have also added a prenatal. My body hates me!

Just curious if your doctor recommended taking the OTC along with the 50,000.  Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin and it can build up toxic levels in the blood.  https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-d-toxicity/AN02008

I had a Vit D level of 5 last year, and even then my doctor and nutritionist both said to not add any extra OTC vitamin D until I had finished my 8 week RX of weekly 50,000 iu.  After that I was advised to take only 5,000 iu and spend 15 minutes outside twice daily, with my hands and face exposed.

Check your prenatal for the vitamin D amount (which I assume has between 500 and 1000 IU) and then check with your doctor, because 123,500 to 127,000 iu per week is very high.

@Emerald27 - My doctor recommends my levels be between 30 and 100.  The RE, knowing my history of very low Vitamin D levels, has never mentioned that I need to have higher levels.  As long as I am at 30+ they don't have me add more beyond the 5,000 I take daily.

I also take the 50,000 prescription once a week as well as an over the counter supplement which I am not actually sure of the dose!  My endocrinologist prescribed it to me and told me to take the over the counter supplement everyday in addition to the weekly dose.  I never asked how much and he never told me.  I guess when your levels are that low it takes a lot to get them back up?
