S/O of guns in diaper bags

So I'm in Canada and it's super, super rare to get a licence to carry a concealed weapon. Basically you can only get one if you can prove the police can't protect you.

There's a guy in my city that has applied for a licence to carry a concealed weapon and it's all over the news. The guy's house was firebombed a couple years ago and the firebomber was released last week. He's applied for the licence and it's believed his chances of it being granted are slim to none.

Such a different culture!

  • Wow that's crazy. DH has to literally go take a course which they shortened to four hours recently, take a shooting test which is so easy I can pass and apply for it with a $350 fee. It takes up to 6 weeks to receive but he got his in two because he has security clearance so his background check was so quick. Crazy the differences! Is it hard to buy a gun in Canada?

    Goddamn Canada you are amazing.

Now why was this guys home firebombed?

It was essentially a neighbour dispute that escalated. Started with this guy telling his neighbour to keep his livestock off his property or he'd "handle it himself" and he did (no details about what the "handling" entailed).

I'm in Canada and have never seen a gun for sale anywhere - not sure where you can even get one. When my husband first got his passport I took him over to Michigan and he couldn't believe all those guns just sitting out for sale in Outdoor World. Yeah, it seems a bit odd to us.

  • You can buy a gun in any sports store, hunting place, even Canadian tire, yo just have to know where to go. You do need a gun liscence ( which you have to take a course for) and the store then sends the registry information to the government but its relatively easy to buy a gun here. Its the permit to carry a concealed weapon that is next to impossible to get.

I was just about to type this out  in response to the pp. Canadian tire only has ammo where we live though.

I live in the states and have never seen a gun for sale lol! I wouldn't have the first clue where to buy one either. I've always assumed you need a gun license to get one but I'm not positive on that.

Depends on the state but in most no. You do however have to have a background check but they do that at the gun store.

I know many supporters of the 2nd Amendment have fought requiring background checks and licenses, but I don't see why it's a bad thing to need to prove you can handle a gun prior to owning one. This isn't even crazy anti-gun to me. I think anyone who wants to own one should need to have a background check and pass a test showing they know how to use it and how to store it safely. Is requiring a discussion on safety and ensuring the person is capable of aiming and pointing correctly really that onerous?
