Possibly stupid infant care question

How often do you aspirate/suction your baby's nose? DS2 is a little snorty and I can see a little bit of stuff in his nose. It's not completely stuffed though. Would you suck it out? He just hates it so much and I don't want to torture him unnecessarily.

When ds was stuffy, I would use the nose frida every diaper change and before he ate. Make sure to use saline with the suction and also after. It's important to keep their little nasal passages moist.

I do use the saline before but not after. I didn't think of it. I will try to remember to do that. He doesn't mind the saline too much at least.

I never once did it when DD was an infant (and she's too old now, so never done it ever). Her pedi said unless she was really having trouble breathing it could do more harm than good. She never had more than a sniffle though. If I were you, I'd leave it alone unless he can't breath.

Yeah, I worry about over drying his nasal passages or irritating them by doing it too often. I wouldn't even think of doing it for just a tiny bit of stuff but his pedi has commented twice on his nose sounding congested. I think it's just normal baby snorting. DS1 snorted a lot too. Maybe my kids are particularly snorty? DH has extremely narrow nasal passages and I have a severely deviated septum, so it wouldn't be surprising I guess.

  • I did it once a day when they were VERY congested, which didn't happen very often

  • I don't think I ever did it for either kid they just never needed it.
  • I never did it for DS1, and I think I used it maybe once or twice on DS2. He's a little stuffy right now and DH keeps bugging me to "suck his nose out" but he's breathing just fine so I just wipe with a Kleenex every so often.

  • I also used the Nose Frieda at diaper changes when her nose was snotty.  The Nose Frieda works so much better than a traditional nose sucker bulb thingy.  I think it's easier on baby's nose since you can't actually sick it up there and accidentally scratch their nose.

  • I do remember our ped telling us the more you suck the more they make so unless it is causing breathing issues just let it be.
  • Alright, I guess the consensus is to avoid it unless he can't breathe. He can, so I won't. Thanks, ladies!
