Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding & Metformin

Hello! I'm not yet breast feeding my lo, but intend to after she makes her big debut. I am currently on 1500mg of metformin to treat my insulin resistance as a result of the PCOS I have. I don't necessarily feel dependent on it, but it definitely makes me feel like my levels are more balanced with hardly any effort. I spoke to my obgyn about continuing metformin while breast feeding and he said it was probably best that I quit, although he is not my endocrinologist (and I intend to seek her opinion as well). I just wanted to know if any other women are on metformin or have been while breast feeding.

-thanks in advance!

Re: Breastfeeding & Metformin

  • I was on Metformin for PCOS, took it all during my pregnancy and continue taking it while breastfeeding. My OB and the lactation consultant said it was fine.  It's actually supposed to help increase your milk supply.

  • Thanks for the response! @82Sonia :) unless I have my glucose test come back abnormal I'm not scheduled to meet with my endocrinologist till 6w pp. I think I'll meet with her before though and bring up what you've told me. :)

  • It's at least worth a phone call to your endocrinologist for some peace of mind.  Good luck!

  • Thanks all!! I've been worried that if I give it up my hormones will go out of snack and my milk supply with 'em.
