Driving 6 hours by yourself at 35weeks

Title: Driving 6 hours by yourself at 35 weeks

Quick question: Would you drive 6 hours away by yourself to see your brothers at 35 Weeks pregnant? (I'll be 36 on Monday)

My brothers are coming from Penn and Corpus to my hometown and I live 6 hours away. And I really want to see them! I haven't seen them since March. I'm such a family girl.

And I'm asking my OB tomorrow at my appt. Just want opinions!

Re: Driving 6 hours by yourself at 35weeks

  • I would go as long as you are not high risk or having other complications.

  • My OB doesn't want their patients more than 1 hour from the hospital after 33 weeks. Personally I wouldn't want to sit in the car that long even if I had another driver. Alone, no way.

  • I'm a caution girl.  I'd do it, but I'd examine my route for hospitals and bathrooms along the way.  Also, you'll want to plan to stop every couple of hours to walk around to keep your ankles and feet from swelling too badly.  Edema will be the one thing that will make an appearance if you don't drink plenty of water and stop to walk some.

  • Personally, no. I try to stick close to home after around 30 weeks. Being alone only makes it worse.

  • I'd totally do it. Though driving for that long/sitting in one spot that long would be tough.

  • Thanks ladies! Y'all all have some valid points!! I have planned my route out if my OB will let me go. And I'm not high risk and haven't had any complications. But will definitely will be asking my OB :)
  • Probably, but I would plan for it to take more than six hours. I can't sit for more than an hour/hour and a half right now, if I do it's really hard to walk and I'm sore. So I would plan for a lot of stops with bathrooms and walking.

  • No way. I was not comfortable commuting an 1.5 hours to work at 35 weeks. No way I would drive anywhere for 5 hours.
  • I wouldn't but I am high risk due to blood pressure issues and the last trip I went on, I was so swollen and uncomfortable and it was only a 3 hour ride.

  • I travel for 6hrs for work once a month. My OB wad fine with me going the week that I hit 36 weeks. I had a list of in-network hospitals along the way. I packed a bunch of water to stay hydrated. I stopped every 2 hours or so. I had all of my paperwork in the car with my pregnancy history. I had the car seat packed. I made sure I was prepared and I was comfortable with it. (I even drove through areas without cell service for a 30 mile stretch but communicated with DH that if I didn't call him by x time, start to worry and head my way) I would do it, especially ix you don't get to see them often.
  • I travel a three hour distance twice a month (6 there and back) if the ob says its okay, go for it. Stay hydrated, stop regularly, pack a good healthy lunch and snacks. There are hospitals in or near most places, they usually all know how to deliver babies! They can always contact your ob for your info, you'd be pretty unlucky for that to happen though.
  • Thank you ladies!! Taking all of y'all's advice if she does let me go! I see no reason for her not to let me but then again she is the doc! And yes it is 6 hour drive there and then 6 hour back. Id be leaving Fri morning then come back Sun early afternoon! :)
  • I personally wouldn't do it, but that's just cause that long in the car would be so freaking uncomfortable for me.

On the other hand, if you're comfortable with the drive alone and your OB gives you the OK I don't see a problem with it.  Most will give a copy of your records for the chance you need to seek medical attention while away.
  • You'll be fine. All I do is drive for work & I'm never uncomfortable. If anything it's relaxing lol...

This is my feeling. If you want to try you can. Is there a reason they can't take a day trip to come see you?

  • I drove about 5 hours at 35 weeks to see my husband and there were no issues, other than the "OH MY GOD I NEED TO FIND A BATHROOM" moments. My doctor wasn't particularly happy with me, though...
