Blood and mucus in stool of 1 month old

My 6 week old son had bloody mucus in stool last night and a couple times through the night.  He is acting completely fine smiling ear to ear and no fever.  Went to MD today and he said that it is normal for this to happen this young and it could be just an irritation to the formula.  He states that there is a chance that he could have and allergy but he thinks it is just a sensitivity that can come and go.  He wants us to try Similac Alimentum or Neosure.  I noticed that this formula is very expensive.  I of course want my baby to be health so I will pay the price but wondered how do I know that he doesn't just have an irritation that is going to come and go and not an allergy if we are just going straight to the hypoallergenic formula that is crazy expensive.  How do I know we can't just get like gentlease or something like that.    Has anyone experienced this?  I hope that all makes sense.

  • DD has bloody stools and an allergy to the milk proteins in her formula.  We used nutramigen and didn't have any more issues with it and around 1 yr she was able to tolerate whole milk.  DS was also on nutramigen due to his reflux.  Yes it's $$, but it's what we had to get for them at the time.
