Could be formula healthier?

Hey mama's!  I am feeling discouraged... after finding specs of blood in my LO's diaper I cut all dairy, soy, nuts, eggs, and gluten.  I have been dairy free for 12 days and 1 week of everything else.... Well this morning there were specs of blood in her diaper. I am feeling heart broken and as if I am hurting my daughter :(  I am looking for support that it will get better or any ones  experience.  I am starting to wonder if since my BM is hurting her if she would be healthier on formula?  She is 5 months and I really want to continue BFing but I will do whatever is best for my baby!

  • It takes 2-3 weeks for all dairy to get out of your system, then another 2 weeks or so for it to completely clear baby's system. So before you assume that cutting dairy wasn't the solution, you need to wait at least 4-5 weeks.

It took a good 3 weeks for my baby to be less gassy/fussy and 4.5 weeks for his stools to return to normal.

I know it's tough, but keep up the good work mama!!

  • It might not being those allergens you listed. For me, I realized my son has a bit of blood in his diaper whenever I ate food loaded with garlic. So I just try to stay away from that, but it's not like it's one of the common foods that bothers BF babies. Can you think back to what you ate before she had blood in her diaper? It might just be something simple.
  • I agree with CLLDLL.  It takes time for LOs GI tract to repair and the symptoms to go away.  My LO had MSPI and it took almost 4 weeks for her to be completely symptoms free (she had lots of blood, mucous, and inconsolable crying).  Also, have you cut out all hidden dairy?  Many items will say dairy if they contain milk, however, hidden dairy is not always labeled.  Maybe you should cut out hidden dairy (look at labels for casien, lactoglobulin, whey etc) and see if that helps? I had to eliminate all dairy and soy, even hidden,  for my LO.  Also, formula is not necessarily better in your situation.  Formula is primarily dairy and soy based so you would have to use a specific formula like Neocate or Almentium which has hydrolyzed diary in it.  Hang in there and give it some more time.
