High-Risk Pregnancy

Sleeping issues

Hey ladies, I am 34 weeks and two days along. I feel like I have run a great marathon since my Dr. did not even think I would make it this far after starting preterm labor at 28 weeks. Currently I am 3cm dilated, but only 25% effaced, as well as I have a small placental abruption at the top of my uterus that is causing a lot of contractions. Anyway, I have found that since my last discharge from the hospital sleeping at night has become very difficult. I often wake up at 3:30am and stay up till after I take my oldest son to school and spend the day exhausted with my 3year old in tow. Do any of you have suggestions on how to get better sleep while being so completely uncomfortable? Thank you in advance for your advice.

Do you have to be alert at a moment's notice? I take Ambien at night and am groggy and out of it for at least six hours. I can only take it bc I am in the hospital w no responsibilities. I would suggest trying to sleep as soon as the kids go to bed. Start winding yourself down earlier w tea or turning off electronics. Also, maybe taking a nap in the afternoon? If your 3yo doesn't nap, there is no shame in occupying him with a movie and keeping him in bed with you. Good luck. Third trimester sleep seems pretty elusive to me. :)

  • I was going to suggest ambien as well. I don't care for it too much because it makes me loopy but it works. Or maybe just a Benadryl, that knocks me out good! And totally on board with the toddler movie time while you nap...it will totally rejuvenate you! I also find reading in the middle of the night when I wake up puts me back to sleep...but I usually have to read for an hour or so!

  • Thanks ladies! With my last pregnancy I took ambien, but this time around I am getting a divorce so its just me and my 11 year old and 3 year old so I don't think it's a good idea. I might try the Benadryl tonight though I am so exhausted and the contractions never seem to stop, but they are not consistent enough to go to L&D. I am honestly getting worried that when the time comes I am going to be so exhausted I am not going to be able to labor.
