anyone self publish e-book or document for personal or work?

I am looking into something for work where we could sell a book or manual as an option to accompany other products... don't want to do it as a pdf b/c of the ease in sharing, copyright, etc and was thinking of some of the self publishing options out there via itunes, amazon, etc. Would want it to be able to used by the broad audience and not sure if itunes would limit it to mac users or amazon to kindle/kindle app users...anyone w/ experience? Is this worth it, does it cost a lot, is it labor intensive?

    My brother is in the process of doing a kindle book on amazon. If you don't have a kindle it doesn't matter as most iPad users have the free kindle ap. they have support to help you too. I think it's free to create. Images can be tricky though.
