NBFR, would you send your kid to school?

If he had a runny nose and cough? This is day three. No fever. He is a little tired though. I sent him, but told him just to try and if he felt crappy later to give me a call. Im home today with DD so I feel l Iike I should have just kept him home.

How sick does your kid have to be before you keep them home?

I usually only keep them home if they have a fever or are throwing up, I might if they have diarrhea also just depending on the severity.

If they run a fever they stay home, because that's a daycare rule, and fevers can make people feel a little yucky so for public school I would play it by ear but they'd probably stay home if a fever then too.

Again, with diarrhea, younger children don't know how to handle and I would hate for my child to be embarrassed due to an accident, so I would probably keep them home.

I think you did the right thing. If your DD is sick, she will get much more rest home alone.

DS goes to school unless he has a fever or a stomach virus of some sort. The few times I've sent him to school not feeling well, I have always told him to call me if he needs me.

Day 3 of being home, or Day 3 of having a cold but still going to school?

If DC had been home for two days with only a cold, I would have sent them by Day 3.

If DC had been going to school for two days and had a cold, I would have kept them home and let them rest on day 3.

However, I have a VERY flexible job, and can work from home. I'm not sure I would have burned a sick day on a cold / rest day, because there is plenty worse that the kids will catch over the year.

@wahoo it's day three of going to school with a cold. He hasn't stayed home. Im home with DD today not because she's sick but because it is my day off, so he really wanted to stay home with us.

In that case, after day 3 with a cold, he probably could have stayed home but only to rest/sleep all day. I mean, I wouldn't rush him to the dr w a 3 day cold, but if I was already off work, I may have let him stay, no playing though.

It all depends on the age of the child.

1) Do the kids still share tables or other "equipment", ie crayons, toys, etc? - Middle schoolers who just share desk tops are less likely to share/contract a cold then gradschoolers who still sit at long tables, use team stations for class work or share the group crayons/scissors/etc.

I would keep my child home that first day of a sniffly cold (even though she was contagious before she became symptomatic) to allow her the ability to really rest through the cold and to mitigate her Typhoid Mary moments.

2) How much parenting does the sick child need? - Honestly, if I was a Working mom, I would be more hardpressed in finding someone to watch my sick 4 yo than my sick 11 yo. One needs constant supervision, the other just needs someone to make sure the house doesnt burn down.

I would not want to put that burden on another working parent. And no, I am really not this altruistic, but my mother is a 45 year PreK, Kindy teacher and I grew up hearing the stories/complaint/concerns about this very subject.

Most school rules are no fever for 24 hours and same for diarrhea.

My handy rule is if you feel well enough to play, you feel well enough to sit in class. No fever, no diarrhea then they should be ok. I don't like to keep LO home more than necessary so they don't miss something important. I'm lucky enough to be close to the school and could run over at lunch to give a decongestant if needed.

I would have kept him home. Its possible he is not getting better because his body has not been resting enough. Plus you are home anyway.

For colds and stuffy noses with no fever, I send the kids to school. Unless it's a major head cold and their sinuses are all screwed up, I give them some cold medicine and off they go. When they come home there's no outdoors playing, just homework and resting.

This. When I was younger if you stayed home from school sick on a Friday, you were in all weekend, needless to say I was hardly ever sick on Fridays. I will be doing this with our kids as well.
