Need Your Answers for "Getting Ready For Baby"....please. :-)

Hello mama's! I'm newly 6 weeks and two days pregnant. I need some feedback from some of you who went through the "getting ready for baby" process. My questions are....When is the best time to start ordering nursery furniture (early?) and start setting up nursery? When is the best time to have your baby registry finished? When is the best time to have your baby shower? I know all of you will answer according to your happenings and experiences of such preparations.....that's what I'm looking for! Thanks so much ladies! ;-)

  • I didnt start buying "baby" anything until about 20 weeks.

Registry was done at about 30 weeks.

Baby shower was thrown for me at 32 weeks.

  • I didn't shop until I knew the gender at 14 weeks. Shower was 30 weeks. Hopefully your hostess won't choose a shower date too close to your due date because at that point I personally was miserable.

  • I started sorting clothes and setting up the nursery first trimester this time. My first pregnancy was complicated, so I had no energy and when I had a screaming newborn, the place was a mess. I was in no position to fix it up while trying to figure things out. Also, when I went back to work at 3.5 months, with my long commute, I didn't have a lot of down time. It came together very slowly. The last minute nesting instinct doesn't always kick in. And when it does, you won't have all the energy to do what you want done.

Have your registry finished before your invitations for your shower go out.  Your shower date is kind of up to whomever is throwing it for you but hopefully they will get your opinions on that.  MIL threw me a shower super early; I wasn't even 20 weeks yet.  My mom threw we a shower a little later on.  I was 28 weeks.  The reason I had my shower(s) early was because I was having twins and had to travel for both of them. I wanted to make sure that I was not traveling when I got into the 30+ weeks in case something were to happen.

We started ordering nursery furniture around 16 weeks.  While it's true that it's not a necessity to have it done right away since your baby might be sleeping in your room, it was still so much fun and exciting to set it up. We enjoyed doing that as preparation for the babies to come.

  • I basically refused to buy anything prior to the 20 week anatomy scan. We did a lot of looking before then and had the crib picked out (because we thought we would need to order and wait for shipping). We registered the day of the anatomy scan (because my DH insisted) and bought our crib the same day (the store happened to have one in stock when we ordered).

We painted the room and put together the crib around 22 or so weeks, I think (I actually don't remember for sure). Again, might have waited on that, but husband insisted. We bought the dresser/changing table about 28 weeks because it was the last one in stock in our area. All other furniture we already had and all other decor we shopped for at various times.

Our first shower was a surprise co-ed shower at 27 weeks. My work shower was at 31 weeks and my family shower at 34 weeks (and DH's work shower somewhere in between).

I would agree with others that if you plan for baby to room with you at first, you don't NEED to have the nursery ready, but it was something we wanted to do and I wouldn't have done it differently (and mine was in with us until 8 months).

  • We did our registry around 20 weeks, had a shower at 25 weeks & another at 30 weeks. We moved into our new house at 38 weeks so we didnt do nursery until then and I had baby at 39 weeks. I wish I had more time. Doing it all in a week was really stressful. I did however wash and sort all his clothes after both showers were over.
  • I was IVF and had a few losses so I refused to do Anything until she was viable outside me! I basically started everything at like 34 weeks, shower at 37 weeks. I really wish I hadn't rushed getting the nursery done after the shower though....she is in the bassinet in our room and really only goes in to nursery to change her clothes!

  • I would suggest to also have a MOM help you with your registry. You can never have enough burp clothes. You never know how big or small the baby is going to be so keep this in mind for picking clothes. Like I didnt buy enough NB size clothes and I bought ALOT of summer 0-3months but shes not going to wear them b/c its getting cold & my baby is tiny! Have a bit of everything, meaning pants and full sleeve onesies even for the warm months!
When people give you diapers dont open every box right away incase you dont need a certain size then you can possibly exchange them or give them as a gift to a new mom.

When is the best time to start ordering nursery furniture (early?)
I would say wait until 2nd trimester. Anywhere between 24 to 30 weeks. My reasoning is that if, God forbid, you miscarry before viability (24 weeks) then you don't want furniture showing up. That could be very painful.

When is the best time to have your baby registry finished?
I would complete your registry by 35 weeks

When is the best time to have your baby shower?
Well first of all you don't throw your own shower. If someone offers to honor you with one then I'd do it after 35 weeks. I had my first (and only) baby shower at 37 weeks. I have seen some thrown as early as 28 weeks & attended one where the MTB was 38 weeks. By then you should have a good idea of things you've already bought for yourself. Then see what additional items are gifted to you.

As of right now you are kind of putting a lot of carts before a team of horses. Get through first trimester & evaluate from there. Congratulations & I hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy.

  • When is the best time to start ordering nursery furniture (early?) and start setting up nursery?
It depends on where you're getting your furniture.  If it has to be made (expensive, all-wood furniture from a children's or regular furniture store) then order around 20 weeks.  It can take over 3 months for it to be made and delivered.  If you're buying more mass-produced stuff from Asia (Ikea, Target, Walmart) then you can probably wait till 2 months before baby arrives.  I've known a lot of people who had their babies early (although mine was late) so I'm a big advocate of having all the essentials ready 1-2 months before you're due.

When is the best time to have your baby registry finished?
You can start researching and working on it now but not go public until after 20 weeks.  You just need it done before your shower.  Don't list your shower date on your registry.  List your due date because it will give you longer to add stuff to it before you're cut off and wont' get the discount anymore at some places.

When is the best time to have your baby shower?
Depends on how far you are from the shower site.  If you're in the same town wait till about 6-8 weeks before the baby's born.  If you're farther away then try to have it at the beginning of the third trimester because travelling gets tougher and tougher.  You don't want to have the shower too late because you never know when baby will come, and it gets harder and harder to do things the farther along you are.
  • A lurker on this board (TTC in the Spring and looking just to remind myself of newborn stuff...lol).  Anyway...
We didn't order nursery furniture or work on the nursery until I was about 6 months pregnant.

I started to working on my registry when I was about 10 weeks along.  Just adding little things, I was excited and it was fun!  I didn't tell people about it until close to my shower though.  I had it done by then.

I had my shower when I was about 30-32 weeks pregnant.

    Good luck and congrats!!

  • As far as the nursery goes, I'd say it depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you have a lot of plans for decorating then I would start it 2 or 3 months ahead of your due date. Same with getting furniture. But your baby could come early and if you are not having a low risk pregnancy, I would suggest at least getting whatever you plan on having baby sleep in sooner than everything else.

Really, you can start your registry whenever you want. We waited until after baby was considered viable at 24 weeks. As far as baby showers, I had two of them. The first one was at 33 weeks and the second was at 38 weeks. I suggest not waiting as long as 38 weeks because I was so uncomfortable at mine. Plus, baby could come anytime so for my nerves sake, I liked the earlier date. It also helped me figure out what I had left to get for baby before he came.

  • We started setting up the nursery pretty much right away. It was a spare bedroom being used as storage and had so much stuff in it. It took a while to clean out. Plus we painted and got new carpet. So our nursery was ready for a while, which was good for us because we didn't have to stress about it later down the road.

I didn't buy anything for the baby (besides nursery stuff) until I knew her gender around 20 weeks.

I had two showers, one at 32 weeks and one at 34 weeks.
