Went to a Breastfeeding class tonight

I have to say the instructor was a snooze.  I think I learned a couple things but DH just bought me the book "So thats what they're there for" which Im betting will be even more useful.  Maybe the only bright Idea I got from the class was feeding the baby to empty one breast then if he cant finish the other one pump it dry and save it for when I'm back to work.  Oh and It might have scared me a little with all the PPD talk.  Anyone take the class and get some good input?

  • I nurse on one side each feeding, but don't pump the other one. I've always had to much. That way i am emptying each breast.

  • Yeah, there is zero reason to pump to artificially increase your supply. You set yourself up for mastitis and lots more work/frustrations because the. You HAVE to pump each time to avoid engorgement.

Block feeding is good to fix an oversupply, but only if you don't pump on the opposite side.
  • Wow, I took a bf class and was also told to pump the other side once a day (in the morning) to make a stash for when I go back to work. Do you ladies have any other suggestions for a better way to get a stash for bottle feedings?

Some other things that I found interesting is that breast fed poop doesn't cause diaper rash and breast fed babies usually don't need to be burped.

I really enjoyed learning about the amazing body and all the things it does to feed our babies.

  • Interesting--I would also disagree, based on my own experience, that breast fed babies don't need to be burped and don't get diaper rashes

As for stashes, you can always start one free your supply is a little more regulated. But to start out pimping everytime you feed or even occassionally is just, in my opinion, a recipe for exhaustion and painful oversupply problems, both of which may lead to giving up on breastfeeding earlier than you had planned to.

I think the instructor should have said that the burping and diaper rash thing is less common with breast fed babies because I did Google around (because I was so surprised) and did see some people said there are always exceptions.

Thanks for the advice on stashes. While I enjoyed my class, and found it helpful, I just feel like breastfeeding is something better learned through experience. Don't get me wrong, it was great to learn about it, but like anything else, learning from a text book or whatever is not the same as finding what works for you and actually experiencing it. I'm hoping once I start that things will progress naturally.

Clearly I cannot sleep again. Sorry for the mini novel.

  • I was told to burp after every feeding no matter what during my class. Hmm.

  • I loved my class! Especially finding out about all the support resources in my community. Also, we learned a lot about working through some of the common issues women have that cause them to give up.

  • Taking my class next week and looking forward to it! At this point it all seems very mysterious to me.
  • I loved my class too. My teacher brought in a new mom with her 5 week old and went through one hold in great detail. I agree that experience is best but having a live Mom and baby was so helpful.

She also talked a lot about finding your rhythm vs. trying to stick to a schedule. Sounds like a good POV.

I was told the same thing about making a stash for when u go back to work, but my instructor told me to start doing this about a week before I go back.
  • That stinks, the class I took I found very informative! It wasn't the most exciting thing, but very useful!

  • I took a class.  Seemed more like a vehicle for pushing particular parenting styles so I wasn't thrilled about that, but I did learn some stuff about how to tell if LO is getting enough.
