High-Risk Pregnancy

High Risk OB Pre-Conception Consultation

What can I expect?  I am a type 1 Diabetic and my husband and I plan on TTC in the next 6 months.  My endo has encouraged me to see the high risk OB for a pre-conception consultation and recommended that my husband come with me.

I am wondering what to expect?  Will I have a physical?  I got the impression that it was more of a meet and great type thing with an opportunity to get my questions answered, but upon some googling I'm seeing that I may have a physical (my last pap was in March).

Any advice/tips would be great.

And not that it matters, but I go to Duke Medical Center, just in case there is anyone else out there who may go there!

Re: High Risk OB Pre-Conception Consultation

  • It is usually a greet and meet. Have a list of questions prepared for the dr. They will tell you their plan and protocol. Usually they won't do a pap but just be prepared for one just in case. Every has their own way of doing things. I always think those pre-pregnancy are helpful because you get a feel of the dr before hand. Good luck!!!

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I will have my husband come with me as he has some questions as well and it will be good to hear things straight from the doctor.  Hopefully it will ease his mind a little bit!

If I have a pap he can just step out of the room, I suppose.  Fingers crossed that I don't have to have one, but I guess I need to get used to the poking and prodding for an upcoming pregnancy!
