potty training

Hi, I'm actually visiting from the 12-24 board... I have a 19 month old who is showing signs of being ready to pt. I was thinking of staying home a few days next week and giving it a shot... does anyone have anything they can offer in the way of advice/experience? I'd really appreciate input! Thanks :)

My almost three year old son loves it when I put blue dye in the little potty so that when he pees in it, it turns green.  We started with just getting him to go first thing in the morning since he could hold it all night and was ready to release it first thing.  He is still working on it, but now we are just sitting on it every hour and if he pees, he gets to put a star on a piece of paper that tracks when he goes.  If he doesn't pee, he still gets praised for sitting on the potty and I tell him next time he goes he will get a sticker.  I feel no rush to train him so we have been following his lead and been doing this process for a few weeks now.  I'm sure there are likely quicker ways, but he used to be afraid of the potty, so I am trying to keep it a stress-free event for him.

  • I'd say go for it. My son is 2.5 and I was pregnant when he first showed signs at that time. I went for it and he did good until 2 weeks into it and he lost interest. I put him back in diapers BC he lost interest but when DD turned 1 month old DS decided he wanted to make a go at it again so we did and 3 months later he's potty trained except he wont pee in a public restroom. Good luck!

  • Mine also won't pee in public. Only at home. Told my hubby he needs to teach him to stand up and go in a urinal!

  • Personally I'd wait. We started DD at 27 months and it took a good 8 months before she was fully day trained. We're still working on night training. Ugh!

  • It is really common for boys at that age to show interest and then change their minds. If you want to do it, go for it but don't be afraid to back off. BTW, once you potty train there is a whole new set of challenges like finding clean toilets immediately lol. Seriously not worth rushing. When your kid is ready, it is so so much easier.
