Bedtime

I'm trying to get my LO to bed before he falls asleep... I want him to learn to fall asleep in his crib on his own. Daycare has a tough time getting him to nap in his crib, and we do, too. He always sleeps in his crib at night - but he wakes up randomly and can't seem to get himself back to sleep when he wakes up (even when he's not hungry.)

We've pushed his bedtime back from 9:30 to 9:00 to 8:30 (because he was  consistently falling asleep for 30-45 minutes in the evening anyways). Tonight, he skipped his evening nap but started to get fussy about 7:15, so we started his bedtime routine. He was out cold before I put him into his crib at 8:00.

Should I just start making bedtime even earlier?! I don't get home 'til 6pm, so the thought of him going to bed earlier than that is kind of heartbreaking.

Re: Bedtime

  • Yes. It is hard but best for baby to put him to bed before he is overtired.

  • I just wonder if it makes more sense for let him doze for a half hour (he won't sleep for more than 30 minutes or so if he's not in his crib in the dark with white noise and the whole sh'bang) and then make bedtime a bit later.... or just skip that nap and put him to bed earlier.

  • Harper cant keep her eyes open even a minute after 7pm.. so anytime between 630 and 7pm is normal here. She sleeps until 4am (approx) she eats and back to bed til 7am-8am.

You can try that but I think you are spinning your wheels. My LO will refuse naps after 5pm and goes to bed at 730d-8 which is really been too late. I plan on letting him go to bed at 7 this week.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child is a really good book if you haven't read it. It took me 3.5 months to realize I was putting baby down too late for naps and bedtime. Now that I don't wait for him to be really tired, he doesn't cry or fuss, he just goes down.

  • Bedtime is 8:30 in my house. He is sleepy then and there is nothing you can do to keep him awake.
  • We've also gone from about 9:30 down to 7-7:30. LO was always falling asleep around 7, and I would have to wake him to change him, put pajamas on, and give him his last bottle. So I just made that his bedtime. If he's not tired yet, I let him hang out but he's usually obviously tired by 8, at which point I put him down.
  • My guy needs to go to bed by 7 or 7:30. Otherwise we have a scream fest at bedtime. It sucks that my time with him is so short each day, but he needs it. He still wakes up in the middle of the night and can't put himself back to sleep, so no help there. Lol. But he goes to sleep easier and more on his own if its not too late.

  • My LO still takes a short evening nap, and is usually up around 7...then goes to bed between 8:30 and 9.

My friends think I'm crazy and that babies should be kept awake after 5 pm and put to bed earlier, but I've tried and tried, and that just doesn't work for us. If I put her to bed any earlier, she treats it like a nap and wakes up an hour later even though I've done the bedtime routine and she's in her crib.

  • Our LO takes a late afternoon/evening nap (around 5pm - 6:30pm) which sort of sucks because I get home around 5:10pm and sometimes DH has already fed and put him down, so then he is up until around 8 when we start his bedtime routine.  We go to bed together (LO and me - since I get up at 5am) at 8:30pm the latest, he still sleeps in a RnP next to our bed.
