Care package for mom with Preemie in NICU - advice needed

Hey Ladies!

A Colleague/friend of mine had her baby about 6-7 weeks early, on Aug 30.   She had an emergency C.   Baby and momma are doing fine, but Baby will be in the NICU for about another 3-4 weeks (6-7 weeks total).   To this point she hadn't really been asking for visitors etc, but now I think she's getting really tired and lonely at the hospital and has mentioned we can go and visit at the hospital.  So I wanted to go visit and bring a care package with me.

I know the baby is recieving the best possible care, but I wanted to try and bring things that would be useful for her - so my question is, if you know someone who had a preemie and was in/out of hospital every day, recovering from C-Section, what sort of things would you think they might need that they might not have time to stop by a store and buy??

I was originially thinking of bringing meals, but I don't know how logical that is because she's not going to be at home to put them in the freezer right away, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I'll also bring a gift for baby of course, but I wanted to do something for her too..

Let me know if you have been through it, or know someone, or just have a fabulous idea!!  Thanks!

  • So she'll be staying at the hospital while baby's in NICU?  Magazines are nice, baby and non-baby related.  Snack pack of non-perishable food items that she can munch on while at the hospital so she doesn't have to spend money at the cafeteria.  Does she have a Boppy pillow?  I loved my boppy and I used it in the NICU with DD.  Breast pads....
    I'll keep thinking.

  • Maybe gift cards to local food-takeouts with menus, gas gift cards if she's traveling back and forth.  Maybe a comfy sweater/wrap in case she gets chilly with all of the back-and-forth?

  • Stuff to do - magazines, cross words, Sudoku etc.  If she has an ipad or an iphone, maybe an iTunes card, maybe bring her some lunch and eat with her (most NICUs have a special room parents and friends and family can sit in to eat.  A nice blanket and some hand lotion are also nice.  I was only in the NICU for 11 days with my son but it gets old very quickly.

  • OK thanks ladies, I like the magazine/stuff to do idea's..I'll repost to preemie board and see what they have to add!

I don't really know what she might have already, but the boppy is a good idea and she could always exchange it if she did already have it.

  • Some stuff to pamper herself with- toiletries, lotion, shampoo.

Books, snacks it anything that could help her be more comfortable at the hospital

  • Between my two preemies I have had a kiddo I the nicu for about 3 months. I would suggest things to take care of herself with ie; gift certificate for a manicure, or even a nail polish and file and magazine. Gas cards or restaurant gift cards are helpful too!

  • Another good one is babylegs or baby legwarmers to wear under hospital gowns!

  • Books to read to the baby. I liked to read to my son a lot. Not sappy ones though... They just made me cry more!
