Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Started solids and hasn't pooped.

i started solids 2 weeks ago.
the first week just oatmeal, 2 tablespoons once a day - she did great.
then on Saturday I started adding banana to the oatmeal.
On Sunday she had a huge poo but nothing since! So basically no poo a little over 24 hours. She did not get any solids yesterday.

What should I do? Anything? I am assuming this is from the banana.

Re: Started solids and hasn't pooped.

  • I've heard banana can constipate some. So can cereal. I wouldn't worry too much about the time frame but about the consistency of the poop. You can obviously tell if it's getting harder and she's having more trouble. I give T warm diluted apple juice to have softer bowels out of desperation. I have for a couple of months. The doctor told me karo syrup but I think that's ridiculous. I tried it and he hated it, he wouldn't take a karo bottle. I have also heard of moms trying pear and prune juice. If she gets constipated might try one of those. There is not one constipation med for babies I have found at the store. If you find one I say go ahead.

  • I wouldn't worry unless your baby seems very unhappy or unconfortable. If that's the case, call your pedi if you want to inquire about trying some juice.

  • The pedi gave me the ok to give 1 to 2 oz of water daily. As we added solids he would go 4 days without pooping and would cry miserably. So the water is more of a preventative thing than an immediate solution.

  • My son was 4 and a half months when I started him on single grain rice cereals since he wasn't putting much weight on... My doc said to feed them the cereal like you would eat meals, three times a day so I did... My son went 3 miserable days without pooping :-( and I finally called my pedi and he said to give him apples and prunes along with the cereal... I backed off of cereals for a few days until he got back on his regular pooping schedule and now I found Gerber has a rice cereal with a probiotic in it which seems to help.. He gets that twice a day and he's doing great with that!!! Best of luck for you and your LO :-)
  • My son went through that when I gave him bananas. Bananas can cause constipation and so can apples. Usually anything with a P is good to help get a bowel movement. The Karo syrup didn't help him. I would go with prunes. DS ate those and it did wonders. DD hasn't started solids yet but I plan on keeping prunes in the house just in case at all times.

  • My doctor had said 2 ounces of water a day should help.
  • I started solids once a day (homemade), he had not pooped for 3 days so today I went and bought some fresh apricots.  I put it in the food processor, he ate the whole apricot.   A few hours later we had poop, in fact he pooped 3 times.
