s/o natural consequences

What kind of natural consequences do you have for your kids if they're not ready when they need to be (specifically for school)? We're not at that point yet (DD is 2), so I'm just curious.

  • I tell them that they'll be going in their pajamas if they aren't ready when it's time to leave. They know I'm dead serious, so it's never come to that.

  • If they're not ready, they're late. If they forget something, tough luck. We live right around the corner, I've had them walk home at lunch to pick up forms and homework before.

  • Well, she went to school with the wrong shoes today. Next will be unbrushed hair. She also went to school without a cold water bottle and only a granola bar for breakfast.
  • This isnt an issue for me yet but I have a rule that I leave for certain activities by X time. Ready or not.

This morning we had gymnastics class. DS had a fit about something stupid and we couldn't leave at the correct time to get donuts on the way. I dealt with it but when X time came around I carried him to the car and we left. He was upset because he was wearing his PJ shirt and didn't get donuts. It was a bummer. He has already told me next time he will get dressed because it was embarassing. He ate some crackers in the car so he didn't starve or anything but crackers are clearly inferior to donuts.

This works with anything. He may end up going to school in PJs, unbrushed hair, without a hot breakfast (he will always get something to eat but it may not be a hot meal), without extras, etc.

Huh. We weren't allowed to leave school grounds until final bell until junior year.

I'm really REALLY hoping it's not an issue, but being late will probably be his natural consequence when the time comes.

That's *typically* the rule at our school, but I guess because I'm right there, literally 5 houses down the street and the second house from the corner, if its super important the teacher just calls me and lets me know whichever kid is coming. It's the same when one of them has a dentist/doctors appt, they call and say "hey, DS/SD is leaving the school now"

Wow, we didn't have that type of freedom until we were 18. Even senior year we weren't allowed to leave school grounds during the day. At 18 your parent could sign something saying that if they sent a note about a doctor's appointment you could sign yourself out. Even if you were 17 (driving age in NJ) and had your own car your parent had to go in to sign you out for things.

Here, when I was in elementary school, at the beginning of the year, they sent home a note and the parents had 3 choices, A) child can leave school property on any day to go for lunch, B) child will bring a signed note on days they wish to leave school property for lunch, and C) child is not allowed to leave school for lunch. It applied to grades 7 and 8 only and was a priviledge, not a right. In high school anyone could leave the property at lunch, and on spare. For both elementary and high school, if you had an appointment and your parent called in, you just signed out at the office and went on your merry way.

Yeah... I took advantage of that last one a few times in high school. I'd call in the morning and pretend to be my mom and get out of school an hour early. Tsk tsk.
