HOW SOON CAN YOU FIND OUT THE GENDER?

I hear as soon as 12 weeks! I think my drs making me wait until 20weeks..=\ that's so far away!

Re: HOW SOON CAN YOU FIND OUT THE GENDER?

  • I think 12 weeks is a bit too early. I've heard of women finding out as early as 15 weeks though.

  • I wouldn't trust any guess at 12 weeks.

  • So that means wait the 20 weeks. Dang it.
  • At 12 weeks its a highly educated GUESS. They aren't looking for a penis or vagina, they are looking at a nub that will turn into the penis or the labia. It is determined by the "angle of the dangle." I have seen some u/s pictures where it seems pretty questionable. It's only 60-80% accurate depending on how experienced your u/s tech is and how good of a view they get.

My doctor's office doesn't even offer a/s until 20 weeks so they are sure of the sex.

  • @jap618 that just made me laugh out loud
  • It could been just luck that the tech guess it right, but with my first pregnancy, it was confirmed a girl at 14 weeks. But my baby always measured a week or so ahead. And also, at the clinic I attend, their tech can confirm if its a boy as early as 12 weeks. And in her 14 years at this place of employment, she has never called it wrong. So I have faith in her! I can't wait til my next app. I'll be 14w6d. So I'll def get to know!
  • @dani: idk I'm just really impatient with this pregnancy I wish I could be pregnant for two months like a dog so I can have baby here :) my DH thinks its funny he's never seen me so impatient with anything before. Just can't wait to meet the lil one. Seeing the ultra sound for the first time shocked the hell outta me it was amazing :)
  • I you have the NT scan an bloodwork done at 11 weeks you can know by 13 weeks. It's a chromosomal test to determine Down Syndrome risk. But it has a component that can detect a Y chromosome in your blood from the baby. Ask for the test. I'm having mine done on the 30th.
  • I have a nephew with Downs, so my doctor offered me the Maternal 21 test. They check for a bunch of different chromosomal abnormalities, and they also see if there are X or Y chromosomes present (Gender!)

Oh cool thank you! I'm having mine done on the 27th.
  • I find out anywhere between tomorrow and Monday due to being AMA and taking the MaterniT21 test.  Blows my mind that we didn't find out at all with our first and now I can't even wait until 12 weeks to find out with our 3rd ;)

    WHY THE SHOUTING?!

Some techs will take a guess at the 12 week anatomy scan...I wouldn't put ANY stock in that guess as external sex organs have just begun to form at that point. Best to wait until 20 weeks for a definitive answer.

This made me LOL! I read it as a shout too! LOUD NOISES!!

I'm sorry.  Maybe it's my mood or my horribly inappropriate sarcasm but two things came to mind:

    1.  WHY ARE YOU YELLING?!!?!?

    2.
    Google is a helpful tool.

No need to say sorry I thought it was funny :)) google says the same "as early as 12 weeks for some."

  • I'm actually getting a new genetic blood work done at 11 weeks and my doc said they will be able to tell me what I'm having at 11 weeks! He said if I have Y chromosomes in my blood then it's a boy if I don't then it's a boy. I have a 19 month old and this wast even around then. It's brand new! I'm so excited I just have a week and a half and ill know!
  • @jap618 @mrscrcalli

My MIL often types texts and emails in ALL CAPS. I always feel as if she's sent me one of those letters from Harry Potter that scream at you... Why can't I remember what those are called?! Howlers, maybe?

    Howlers!

  • Most insurances will cover an ultrasound at 20 weeks but my doctors office will do a gender ultrasound as early as 14… However that's still pretty soon for it to be accurate because I've heard that sometimes with little boys their testicles don't drop until closer to 20 weeks so it's harder to tell before then

Dr. told me at 12 weeks that it`s probably a girl, and it was a girl.

    That`s the difference:

Actually it generally takes 2 weeks to get the results back so you will be 13 weeks when you find out if you are 11 weeks when your blood is drawn.

    Also, if you don't have a Y chromosome it's a girl.

    @maevanv

    What is the test called?

  • I'm pretty sure that I read in WTE that 14 weeks is the absolute soonest your baby's sex can be determined with any amount of accuracy, but it's a safer bet by 16 weeks.
  • Ramzi method says as early as 6 weeks based on placental placement. Boys implant on the right side of the uterus while girls implant on the left. It's supposed to be 97% accurate, just ask your dr/us tech to interpret the image. The image may be flipped based on how the machine is calibrated or the angle of the image (this is especially true for transvaginal US). It's a new study, so I wouldn't paint the nursery...but sounds like fun.
  • I'm excited to find out! I go to the MFM dr on the 30th (I'll be 13 weeks) and I'm really hoping they will give me the results then. The MFM Dr have the super detailed ultrasound machines... One of the few benefits of being "high risk".
