Choice of Birth Control After Baby

What will be your choice of BC after baby is born???

I never wanted to get back on the pill since it took so long for my cycle to get back on track after stopping.  But I am terrified about getting pregnant too soon.  I am so far considering the "mini" pill (does not have estrogen so hopefully wont affect milk supply), Natural Family Planning method (never done/ not even sure it works), and abstinence (which i keep threatening DH with because he keeps going at it like we are TTC, every time!).  And I just don't think condoms are realistic but I guess I might have to consider it.

  • I'm in the same boat - my understanding is that the am IUD is best for BC while breast feeding, but I've heard so many horror stories. Plus, this is our 1st and we are thinking we'll probably want #2 in less than 2 years, so it probably won't be worth it to have it. :/
  • This is so weird but I've been researching diaphragms. I don't want to go back on the pill either and not real keen on an iud at this point either.

We don't mind that it's not 99% effective. Wouldn't mind getting KU again whenever, but we'll probably TTC again after LO's 1st bday.

DH says we should just pull and pray when I'm fertile. So that's also an option I guess. I'd like to try temping once my pp cycle is back on track.

  • I haven't made a decision about this.... I'm not a fan of birth control personally. We have talked about my husband getting an vasectomy because we THINK we are done... but I have the little thing in the back on my head that says 5 years down the road what if we want another???

I definitely wouldn't want to get pregnant again any time soon... so I'm just unsure.... BLAH. The pull out method is so unreliable... don't want to be worrying about getting pregnant every month.
  • We're going for a tubal ligation after the twins are born as this will be #3 and 4 for us but I have many friends who got mirena (iud) and have been very happy with it! They have a low hormone one and its convenient that you never have to remember a pill or timing and whenever your ready to ttc again, have it removed.
  • Don't try NFP with a newborn or young baby if you've never done it before - it's a recipe for disaster due to wonky sleep habits.

I'm infertile but I'm getting an IUD and we'll more than likely use condoms as well. DH is starting a treatment protocol that causes birth defects so I/we have to be using two forms of birth control for the duration of that treatment.
Six years of infertility and loss, four IUIs, one IVF and one very awesome little boy born via med-free birth 10.24.13.

  • Pull and pray is my choice as well. I hate how BC pills make me feel.

  • I used mirena after DD and had a great experience with it. They were able to place it at my 6 week PP check and I was able to BF with no problem. I plan to do the same thing this time.
  • For the pull and pray.... I am afraid DH has gotten too comfortable with "not" although I have been insisting we practice.

Second this! My parents decided to do NFP when they first got married, but didn't spend the proper time figuring out how their bodies worked (which you won't be able to do with a baby!), less than a year after their wedding, oops, here I am!!!

After this one, we will not be using BC, We want kids close together. However, after #2, I will definitely be getting an IUD, or one of us will be getting something more permanent. I've done a little research, and IUD seems like the best option when nursing (that is if one or both of us doesn't end up with surgery :-p)
  • I will 4th or 5th the Mirena plan. OB said I can get it pretty shortly after delivery. I enjoyed it first time around (I was bad at remembering to take the pill) and hope 2nd time is just as smooth.

  • V A S E C T O M Y!! Can you tell I am pretty excited that I don't have to be in charge of BC anymore?

Yup, we are OAD and unless I end up with a C-Section, MH will be having a vasectomy.  If I do end up with a C-Section I'll likely have them do a tubal while they are in there.

Yea, I wouldn't go the pull and pray route... This is how I got KU this time around with DH (we were getting separated but still sexually active).
  • I did the mini pill while breast feeding my first and I had no problems. I wanted to do mirena but read some scary stuff so I'm glad to see so many people here liked it. I went off my pills in January to see if they were a cause of my migraines. I tried NFP with the advice of a friend and here I am so I was not very good at it. Not sure what to do.
  • I haven't thought about it really at all. P&P has worked for us for our entire relationship... We'll probably continue that route, even though there is no praying on our ends, if it happens it happens.

  • SO says he wants to use condoms. I told him if he doesn't take responsibility for it then what happens, happens.

It's condoms and natural family planning for us!

  • We have this same conversation all the time. I hate the pill and have been off all kinds of bc for almost 3 years and were just pulling out and praying. This seemed to work for said 3 years until the ONE time we didnt pull out and BAM here we are awaiting our first baby. We sound like high school kids from 16 and pregnant. Hahah.
I'm leaning towards the IUD and once we are ready in a few years to try for #2 ill just get it taken out.
I'm glad we aren't the only ones having this struggle.
  • I have a scheduled c-section, and I'm having my tubes tied then.

After we had DS1, we did P&P and avoided sex during and around ovulation time.

  • Most likely DH will get a vasectomy, even though the likelihood of us getting of in our own is probably less than 1% chance of us getting pg on our own.

  • Last time I was put on the mini pill at 6 weeks pp. I am still convinced it affected my milk supply. This time around I've told DH no pills for me! I'm actually not going to do anything to my body for contraception. I have PCOS, so NFP doesn't work and I'll probably have to o back on the pill at some point to regulate my cycle, but not until I'm done BF. I told DH it's on him. We tried for nearly 3 years for this one and I've put lots of fertility drugs in my body.....I'm giving it a break! So it's either p&p, condoms (which can irritate my lady parts) or he gets snipped.

  • The pill. I think I am like, one of the only people in the world who seriously LOVES the pill. I love skipping AF, and it just regulates things for me and I just feel better on it. And, I am just not sure if we are done, so I definitely don't want anything long-term, because if we did happen to decide for a third, I wouldn't want to wait a long time.
  • I am having a tubal as soon as I can after delivery. Birth control does not work for me for some reason. #1 was planned #2 happened on the pill and #3 (this one) happened with paraguard. The only thing left to do is just shut down the factory for good.

I love being on the pill too - shorter periods, less cramping and fewer mood swings. I'll wait until I'm done BFing to start again, so we'll use condoms in the mean time. Trojan ecstasy condoms are fantastic! ;-)

  • Most likely, condoms. I don't want to go on BC again.

  • Not to freak anyone out...I got pregnant while using condoms and the pill!!! Guess bc doesn't work for me either, or someone really wanted us to have a baby.
  • Probably just going to use condoms. We want to start trying for #2 when this LO is about 9 months-1 year old. After number 2 I'll probably go back on the pill.
