Getting desperate..tmi?

Ok ladies... I haven't pooped in 8 days. I went in for an induction on Tuesday of last week, it lasted two days, then I had a c-section and here I am. Does anyone have any advice on how to get things moving?! I've been taking stool softeners since I was out of my c-section (Thursday) and have had Miralax twice. I'm drinking water, obviously, and even tried Taco Bell (now I fondly refer to this as Taco Hell because while I may feel the need to go to the bathroom after consuming it, I can't!!). The Percocet certainly isn't helping unstop things, I'm sure, and while I'm lowering my dose, I can't quite cut it out yet without excruciating pain in my incision after awhile. This brings me to my last point/question- I'm afraid to strain to hard to go to the bathroom. Any BTDT moms out there have any advice about how hard is too hard to push? Sorry, I know this is gross but I'm seriously needing to get through this!!

Re: Getting desperate..tmi?

  • Pretty sure you are supposed to call your doctor at this point.  I think my discharge papers said something like 6 days, and that was a vaginal birth.

  • I thought I was never going to poop postpartum. Coffee helped me to finally go. Just keep up with the stool softeners. It has to come out eventually. :)

You would think! I was told 4 or 5 days after discharge and I'm on day two. Ugh.
  • Maybe a suppository? If its been in there compacting for that long then perhaps taking something orally won't help because it's going to just sit on top, KWIM? I've had issues in the past with constipation (non pregnancy related as well as during first tri) and they worked for me.

I also agree with calling your doc and getting advice!

Also wanted to add that that REALLy sucks and I'm sorry :( I hope you can get things moving comfortably soon!

  • I tried a cup of hot tea and it worked within 20 minutes. Hope you get some relief soon!

  • I tend to go for coffee, fruit, and fiber one bars everyday to keep me regular.

When all else fails, a sausage biscuit from Mc Donald's works like a charm.

    Good luck and happy pooping

  • I used to give my son when he wouldn't go for days, 1tsp of mineral oil and 1 tsp of milk of magnesia. I always worked for him. It made it very soft but not runny too.
  • When the time comes, if you're worried about straining with your incision, hold a pillow firmly over your stomach while you poop. That was a big help for me after abdominal surgery.
  • This sounds like time for a fleet enema and 1.5 bottles of magnesium citrate. This is what we give the patients that visit our emergency room for constipation. It also helped me when I had constipation issues as a result of chemotherapy . Prune juice helps also!!! Feel better!!
  • Try Smooth Move tea. Works like a charm.

  • Dunkin Donuts Iced coffee light and sweet... I havent been able to have one since mid way through the pregnancy because thhings got very soft. But yeah, call your OB and get their help, that's why they're paid the big bucks.
  • I was in almost the same boat. I was 6 days out of my c section before I had my first BM. I was eating prunes and it didn't help. I had a dunkin hot coffee lught and sweet and that helped with my first but it wasn't a lot. It was another two days before my next and hot coffee did the trick for me again. I would def call your doctor now.

Funny you call it taco hell that's what my family calls it regularly because of its 'side effects'.

Good luck to you. It's gotta come out soon!
  • This is weird, but what helped me is not pushing when trying to go, but just rocking back and forth and left to right. Im not sure why it helped, but it took the pressure off and helped me go. I hope this helps.

  • Thank you so much! @Loppy19 and @AFwifelife, any idea where I can find these suppositories? I looked in target today and will hit up a drug store tomorrow, but just wondering if you know a particular place that carries it so I'm not out all day looking.
  • You must try a glycerin suppository! It's a miracle! Or try drinking coffee. Best solution I've found is glycerin suppositories though :)

  • I second the fleet enema, that always helps me a lot to get things started. I hope you can go soon! It's not fun being constipated. :(

  • I know of someone who inserted a tiny piece of Ivory soap into her sons rectum (apparently it's a family secret) when he was really constipated and nothing else was working and she swears by it. I have no idea about the science behind it or anything about it at all actually.

When I was hospitalized for low calcium last summer, the nurse gave me magnesium (to help the calcium absorb) and warned me that it would probably give me diarrhea because it gets everything moving, the nurses were all shocked that it didn't have that affect on me, but it apparently works for everyone else, so maybe try that.

When my sister had her c-section a few years ago, the nurses sent her home with a baggie full of black licorice, they also gave her stool softeners, but said the licorice works wonders.

    Good luck!!

  • Milk of magnesia. I would call your doctor too . Do not try eating foods or drinking drinks at this point. You need stronger meds to help.
  • I've always found coconut water will clean me out!

  • Okay, really tmi, but.. SUCCESS!! Hey, I've got to celebrate somewhere. Thanks for all of your help, ladies!
  • What was the magic trick that worked? I nearly cried on the toilet the other day but rocking back and forth and warm water worked.
  • Well, I had warm tea before bed, I rocked back and forth and I used a little force even though I was scared. Thanks everyone for your help!
