Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Milk allergies?

LO has always been a barfy kid but lately things have been out of control. He's on about half frozen milk and half formula as I'm just coming to the end of EPing and using my huge freezer stash to give him 3 BM bottles a day. He has about 3 to 5 large throw ups per day, not projectile and he's otherwise an extremely happy kid, even right after vomitting. He's almost 6 months old and the vomiting has gotten worse over the past 1.5 months. I've just been reading about milk allergies and see they can develop over the first months of life. I've never been a big dairy eater so maybe it wasn't getting through to my milk much but now with the formula? We're going for his 6 month well visit Friday so ill bring it up with the pedi then but I'm just wondering about other people's experiences!

Re: Milk allergies?

  • My LO spits up all.the.time.  It got worse when he turned 2 months old, but the pedi said it was normal.  Try burping him more often.  Unless he's actually vomiting everything up, he's probably just getting rid of excess.  If you have enough wet diapers and he's not getting dehydrated, he's probably fine.

Milk allergies tend to show themselves with fussiness and weird poops.

  • DS2 does have a milk intolerance (but he seems to be getting over it). The signs were very mucusy poop, eczema, and fussiness/tummy issues.

If it's just spit up, and he is gaining and happy, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • My son has a milk protein intolerance, but never vomited, so we didn't realize that's what it was until he started getting blood in his poop.  Since we switched to soy, his stools are a lot firmer, and not at all mucousy.  He had also started fussing a lot like his belly was hurting as the intolerance developed, which seemed to happen all at once.  Does your LO act like he's in distress?
