Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you feed solids first

Hi ladies! I am a regular lurker. I don't post much because my wifi sucks but I was wondering. Do any of you feed solids and then BF or FF? if so can u please share your schedule? im curious because at my sons 9 mo appointment, our ped told me to feed LO solids first and then to give him his bottle. That he can now eat like us: meal with a drink. I tried this and at first things went well but now I think he is teething and going though a sleep regression or something. I would really appreciate if anyone could offer me a sample schedule. I was feeding solids between bottle feeds. At first he was eating his solids but now he refuses. Honestly I don't really mind if he doesn't eat but i am not sure if its good to backtrack and go back to bottle feeding only. so id like to give this a try. By the way he is a big boy 23 lbs and 30 inches long. So I am certain he is eating well. Thank you all in advance!!

Re: If you feed solids first

  • Sometimes we offer food before milk, sometimes milk before food.  If she hasn't had milk in 3-4 hours, I would prefer she has that before solid foods.  Honestly, I disagree with your doctor that babies are ready to "eat like us" at 9 months old.  He's still a baby!  And just because he's a bigger baby doesn't mean he still doesn't need his nutrients from milk.  I would follow your gut with this one - if he wants milk, give him milk.  If you don't mind him going to mostly bottles, just do that.  He'll eat solids when he wants them.  Doctors should be there for medical advice, and can certainly give you guidance as far as food goes, but it's really a parenting thing, not a medical thing.  I'm willing to bet they spend all of 5 minutes covering the topic in medical school.

  • I think you're right. I do try to make sure he gets his usual milk quota....He pretty much always drinks 24 oz.

  • DS is older than your son but we have followed this routine for quite sometime:

7 or 8 (depending on wake up we'll use 8 for example)

    8 am - 6 oz. formula

    9 am - solids

    12 pm - 6 oz. formula

    1 pm - solids

    4 pm - 6 oz formula

    5 or 5:30 pm - solid snack

    7 pm - solids

    8-9 pm - bed

This has worked well for us.  Trust your mommy instinct.

  • My pedi told me the same thing yours did that she can eat like we do and have 3 meals a day. Our schedule had been for awhile: 7am breakfast and 4 oz bottle 11am: lunch and 4 oz bottle 3pm: "dinner" and 4 oz bottle 7pm: bedtime bottle 8 oz And she is in bed by 7:30pm at the latest, and we offer 6 oz bottles during the day but she only drinks 4 oz. and lately I've been giving her a sippy cup of formula instead of a bottle and she likes that way better

  • My LO's 10 Months. Our schedule is based off the daycare's schedule. Works pretty well for us. A bottle about an hour after each meal and one in the afternoon. She rarely doesn't finish her bottles. If a trend of that started then I planned on cutting back her solids, but she hasn't had a problem and drinks 24oz per day.

    8am: Breakfast

    9am: 6oz BM

    12pm: Lunch

    1pm: 6oz BM

    2:30pm: Small snack

    4pm: 6oz BM

    5:30pm: Dinner

    6:30pm: 6oz BM

  • Thank u ladies! So I try to go with the flow. But as it turns out my son can eat and still drink 5 to 6 oz afterwards! Somedays he takes more milk and somedays more solids but he always takes his usual 24 oz! I will continue to explore what is best for us. Thanks again for everyone's input
