How much do you pay your nanny/babysitter per hour?

I am due in 24 days and have officially started my nanny hunt. My cousin and I are planning to nanny share 2 days/week (at one of our homes) and have the nanny alone at each of our homes 2 days/ week, so she'll be working 4 days per week with a varying schedule of 7am - 5pm and 8am - 2pm. My mom is going to watch our LO the remaining 2 days.

My cousin voiced that she did not want to pay more than $10/hour so we would pay the nanny $20/hour on the days she is watching our children together & $10/hour the days she has each of our children alone.... overall she would net close to $500 per week.

I'm curious, what do you pay your nannies/babysitters per hour? I am a little worried our rate is low but quite honestly don't know how much more we both can budge.

NOTE: We plan to pay under the table cash & we live in a suburb of Los Angeles.

  • We pay $13 per hour for 2 kids for our evening/weekend sitter and about $550 per week for 2 kids full time at a center. So I think you're in the ballpark.

Usually when you nanny share the whole idea is paying less than when you have her 1:1. Like you would pay $10 when she has 1 kid and $8 when she has both.

  • $11-13/hour for our evening weekend sitters.  I've read that average cost for a nanny per week where we live (NC) is close to $500/week.  So I think you're in the ballpark.

I think the way you're calculating it is weird. You're paying first and foremost for her time, with an extra kid being an incremental extra charge. Where I am, it's usually something like $12-13 for one kid, and then maybe $15-16 for two. (Add an extra dollar/hour if you're withholding tax.)

The numbers should work out the same, or maybe even slightly in your favor, but I think your two-child rate is too high and your one-child rate is too low.

  • Ours was $14/hr. we live in South Carolina.
  • $13.50/hr plus $300/month in health insurance for 3 kids in a nanny-share. Was $13.25 when we started a year ago, but it's typical to give nannies a yearly raise. I live in a low-cost-of-living area and pay legally.
