Ear tubes and swimming

I completely blanked out yesterday and forgot to ask the ent how to handle swimming (and heck, even washing her hair). What do you guys do with your kiddos with ear tubes? On the discharge paperwork it said I could get custom ear plugs at the ent but that's probably excessive, no?

  • Our ENT said earplugs always for swimming.  For bathing it is more at our discretion.  Since she doesn't put her head in the water during bath time we skip them for that.  We did get some plugs made at our ENT.  More expensive?  Yes, but they fit so much better.  Since we swim often it has been the best thing for us.

Yeah, we go to a swim class once a week and usually take the kids to the play in the pool at least once a week. Guess we should probably bite the bullet.

  • We never had to wear ear plugs our ENT said that was old school advice. He said no ear plugs in actually better. He could swim as much as he wanted just couldn't go under 5 feet which was never an issue. He had them for three years never wore plugs never a problem!
  • Oh and we swim daily may through September then once a week year round!
  • Yep, we were also told no ear plugs unless he would be submerged in 5 feet or more. We swam all summer with no problems.

Honestly I forgot he had them in after a while. I never remembered until we went to the ped and they would check his ears. It will get better. I remember that our ENT told us he could do ear plugs for our piece of mind, but they were just a money making thing for doctors which made me laugh because he was also a plastic surgeon.
