How many diapers?

How many diapers to you all have in each size? I received a lot of newborn and size 1 diapers from my baby showers. I have gift receipts for a couple of them and wondering if I should exchange them for bigger sizes. Thanks!

Re: How many diapers?

  • For those using cloth 24 or more is best. For disposable I would just buy a pack or so because you never know what type will work best for your LO or what size they will be.

  • When my son was a newborn he went through about 18 diapers a day.

    This is what I'm wondering about - I've heard 10 to 20 a day for a newborn.

  • I use cloth and have about 30 newborn diapers and around 40 one size diapers. We didn't start cloth until my son was around a year old. So for disposables, we used newborn size for a long time since he was a preemie and really small (around 2-3 months) and then size 1 for what seemed like forever. I think we went through about 12-15 diapers a day.

  • As PP have said anywhere from 10-20 diapers is avg for a newborn. I personally have 1 small pack of newborn size, 2 boxes sz 1, and 2 boxes size 2. Huggies are what worked with DS so I'm going with the assumption they will work with LO as well. If they don't fit right most places (particularly Walmart) will exchange them with no receipt.
  • FTM, so no idea on numbers. But I wouldn't open them until you need them and once LO gets bigger, take back what you didn't use. That's what we're doing.

  • We have 2 regular sized packs of newborn diapers in both Pampers and Huggies and a box of size 1's. I don't think I'm going to buy any more until after she is born and we know what size and what type we like the best. DH or another family member can always run to the store if we start getting low before a regular shopping trip.

We have a few small packs of newborn unopened so we cn return them if needed. Also we got a crap ton of loose size 1's in diaper cakes and what not, as well as a few unopened packs. I have no idea what to expect as far as how long he'll be in what size or what brand will work best, so I am going to definitely use all the loose diapers first and then see where we are.

For my own future reference when friends have kids, I'm not going to gift them loose diapers. Packs or boxes are the way to go! I feel like we must have gotten way more loose diapers than most people. I have boxes full of them! Haha!

  • I have a Sam's box of size 1 which has about 200 something in there and then like 4-5 packs of size 1 from Walmart that have about 50 in them. I have no newborn sizes since my baby has measured consistently big. I plan to use my Sam's box first and then IF I need to take any back I have the smaller packs to take back.
  • Tape the receipts to the diapers so if you have to return them it will be easy. I wouldn't do any exchanging just yet - you never know how big or small baby will be or how fast or slow they will grow.

Agreed! I have over 200 loose size 1s from our diaper cakes, in addition to several boxes of 1s and 2s in three different brands from the showers. I added all of them to our registry and marked them "purchased," so I can more easily return them if we need to upsize.

  • I also second taping receipts to diapers or keeping them in bags with receipts.

I have 150+ NB and about 400 size 1's so far. With DD1 we were in size 1 for forever, she didn't start size 2's until she was at least 4 months old.

  • I have a bunch of NBs everyone says not to get many but my DS1 was 9lbs 2oz and was still in them for 2-3 weeks, in which time babies can make a lot of mess. I'm bringing a small pack I think it has 32 in it to the hospital, they say they only supply 6 diapers, which isn't going to be me a lot of good since I usually end up there for 48+ hours. I'm buying a big box of size ones to start us off with to in case she does grow out of the NBs faster than expected. My boys stayed in size ones for quite awhile.
