Cervical Length at 25 weeks

I just got back from my US and appointment. The boys are great but my cervical length has decreased from 3.1 to 2.36 in just 12 days.

My doctor is not too concerned but wants to monitor it closely and I will have another check this week.

Baby A's head has been pretty much lodged in my uterus for 3 weeks now so I am guessing this is what causes it.

I am so upset right now but really have no reference point other than my doctor always telling me she wanted it above 3.

Anyone care to share their stories about CL around 25 weeks and how it turned out - good, bad, indifferent?

Thanks!

Re: Cervical Length at 25 weeks

  • My cervix was a 3.0 at 16 weeks. At 19 weeks it had decreased to a 1.7 with LOTS of funneling.
With bed rest and progesterone suppositories I maintained a 2.0 from weeks 22-35.6 when my water broke and I gave birth to two girls. 5.10 and 5.13. Both perfectly healthy and needed no NICU and came home with us! Keep your head up and just be thankful that you're already passed the viability milestone! Now look forward to making it to 28 weeks!!

FWIW, I also received double rounds of steroid shots.

  • I can't edit on my phone, but wanted to say that Baby A is pressed against my cervix (not uterus). And my next check is not this week but next Monday.

  • No real advice (mine shortened from a 4 to a 3 in a matter of a few days at about 16 or 17 weeks, but with limited activity hasn't shortened since then) but did want to say I hope everything holds steady for you.

  • My advise...at 16w I was 3.5 w abdominal us, at 20w I was 3.4 transvaginal, at 24w I was 3.9 abdominal, and today at 29w1d I was 1.6 transvaginal. My rec is get a transvaginal measurement!!!!! I am now in L&D on HBR until contractions stop, ugh!

  • Mine has gone up and down from 3.7 to 2.0 even as low as 1.8 but some how with bed rest it manages to lengthen back out its been up and down since week 20 it hasn't ever gone back up to 3.7 but its stayed in the 3.0 to 2.8 "safe zone" as my MFM put it. I just need to really take it easy or it starts to shorten again. I have weekly checks but this week I have two u/s due to what looked like funneling on an abdominal u/s for growth of the boys last thursday so I have a check tomorrow and thursday transvaginal to double check it.

  • @mellissalynay90 - Hope you get great news today.  How far along are you?

@smscartozzi- Luckily, I get a transvaginal every other week along with my abdominal.  Now,I am going to start going weekly.  Good Luck!

@PurpleIris30 - Good Luck! What did you limit activity-wise?  I commute each day to work but mostly sit at a desk.

@JordanLeighx3 - I love your girls!  Thanks for the encouragement!

I have contractions if I stand for long or I walk very far.  They don't hurt, but my stomach muscles get tight -- sometimes I have to keep my hand on my stomach to even tell.  If the tightness last for 45 seconds or more, and I have several in an hour, I'm supposed to empty bladder, lay down, and drink water.  If they continue, I need to go in.  Thankfully mine have always gone away once I sit down or lay down.

When my cervix did shorten, I hadn't really been paying attention to the stomach muscle tightness, but called my doctor when I started to have painful contraction -- those I noticed.  Since my cervix was still at a 3 at that point, they weren't overly alarmed at the overall length and they've just kept monitoring the length transvaginally at every appointment.

I'm still at work, but also have a desk job.  Once I get home from work, I generally just lay down for a while, maybe some limited moving around the house.  I have made the occasional Target trip or similar errand, but I just have to be really careful that I'm not overdoing it and I pay close attention to my stomach muscle tightness.  I also have a belly support band that I wear that does help if I do need to be up.

Don't know if this will help, but hopefully you don't have any more changes.  I was totally freaked out when I had such a big change in the matter of just a few days, but knowing what I'm supposed to be paying attention to has helped me.

My cousin's Cervix was at 1 at 22 weeks - and she was pregnant with triplets (and had a 2 y/o son)!  With bed rest and help from family she went full term and has 2 healthy little girls :)

I should add - The 1 baby was lost due to spina bifida - it had absolutely nothing to do with the cervix
