totally bummed right now

I started a new job last Nov. and finalized my PTO and STD and just realized that my first day back to work after LO is born will be the week before Christmas. I was hoping to be off until after since we are hosting 2 family Christmas dinners at our house this year.

I know, this is a woe is me post but I am seriously 2 seconds away from crying: (

  • Can't you take some unpaid days off?  Even if its just a few days.  Hosting two dinners with a newborn/toddler can be a handful.

  • That's rough to have to go back right before Christmas, I'm sorry.   Can you use vacay time?

  • I totally get it! Had DD been born on or after her due date (10-13) I would've been off through New Years. Since she was 10 weeks early and I had to use four of my 12, ill most likely have to go back before Christmas too...and most of mine will be unpaid. I'm super disappointed bc Christmas and Christmas Eve are such a big deal in my family and stupid Christmas falls on a freakin Wednesday so it's not even like well get a nice long weekend out of it. You're not alone!
  • I'm going back that week, too, but I don't have people visiting! Sounds stressful. Hope you can figure something better out!

THIS.  Are you on good terms with your boss?  Maybe they'll understand if you ask soon.
But in either case, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that. As if the last month of pregnancy isn't a joy enough on its own.

  • I fall right in that time as well as possibly returning.  I'm almost hoping I go earlier so I can just return at the beginning of Dec to get some PTO to take for the holidays.

  • Coming back on the 16th is exhausting all of my PTO I have accumulated as well as the 6weeks STD I get: (

  • That happened to me last year when DS was born. We were able to swing it so I took that last week off unpaid. If you can afford it, I would suggest that. Your employer has to allow you up to 12 weeks leave (paid or unpaid) per FMLA (assuming the company has 50 employees, etc), so it is not really a matter of if they will let you but if you can afford to take the unpaid time off at the holidays.

  • Are any of you in Oregon? I know in our state we have a family leave that is seperate from FMLA. We are able to take "bonding time" after the 12 weeks of leave expires... so essentially, I would take 12 weeks paid at 80% (STM) and another 12 weeks at NO pay after that and still have job protection. Maybe some of you all have a state leave that your employer has not adivsed you of. Goodness knows that they dont openly take about it.... mostly cause they dont want you to take it.
  • don't you get holidays off around xmas? it will probably work out to not be very many actual unpaid days off if you went another week.

also, you are going to have an infant and hosting TWO holiday dinners?  godspeed.

  • Why don't you just come back earlier and save some of your leave for Christmas week?

  • I hear you. If DS comes on or before due date, I'm supposed to go back before the end of the year. I've got some alternate ideas in order to stay home until the new year.

I am considering this. I hadn't thought of it until you suggested it. Preg-brain + bmed out = stupid me.

I will get Christmas day off. Unfortunately, that's all they offer. Oddly, we get Black Friday as a paid holiday...

As for the dinners, one is lunch on Christmas day. My family adopted this weird tradition of eating Skyline chili (Cincinnati chili) for Christmas dinner. All of my family comes from out of state and only eats it when they come to town. Yes, we are strange but, at least I only have to boil water and cut up a few onions for that dinner:) the other dinner, ham, noodles, corn, etc.
