Lower back/Sciatica Help?

Hello! I'm not quite supposed to be here quite yet, but I know this is more of a second or third tri problem so I'm turning to you ladies for any advice. I ended up with bad sciatica last pregnancy around 24 weeks. Now, I'm already getting the horrible low back pain that radiates into my hips and down my legs. This morning I fell to the ground a couple times just trying to walk. I've tried taking the max dose of two Tylenol, stretching, walking, etc and I'm still feeling like a granny and just hurt. I know I didn't find much that helped me last time, but I thought it was worth a shot to see if any of you had ANY luck alleviating some of this pain/discomfort. I'm willing to try about anything, as long as it's safe for the baby.

Re: Lower back/Sciatica Help?

  • I had this problem starting pretty early. I think I was around 8 weeks when it started, but it's terrible pain sometimes.. Usually when I'm more active. I asked my doctor at my 12 week appointment and she said prenatal yoga is very beneficial in helping with back pain and sciatica. She also said going to get massages don't hurt :-)

  • I've been struggling with this as well- a heating pad has given me some relief, using our hot tub ( set at only 90 degrees) or taking a bath and sitting on one of those bath pillows or a folded towel has also helped a little bit. It's definitely an ongoing thing for me though and is worse some days than others.

I had it really bad with my last pregnancy.  The best advice I have is to use a heating pad when you can.  Also do prenatal yoga.  Take a class or even just a few stretches like catcow or downward dog really helped.  It was short term relief, but something.

I feel for you.  I would be in tears walking around last time.  I think it had to do with the rapid weight gain.  I was pretty small to start and gained weight quickly.  I've tried to be a lot healthier this pregnancy and not gain as much weight and that seems to help.  It might also help that I'm used to carrying a 24 lb kid around all the time too, so the extra weight isn't horrible yet.

Hang in there :(  Also, talk to your Dr. they might have more ideas.

  • Short periods of heat (heating pad, warm bath) to the area, stretching/yoga/pilates, and rest when possible!  If you're still having trouble managing the pain, you could seek out a referral to a physical therapist for assessment and recommendations.  That helped me a lot during my first pregnancy when I had horrible lower back pain and tailbone pain.
    I feel for you!
