OOOO... new to this board... happy to be here, but a bit annoyed....

We went in for our second ultrasound today (about 5.5 weeks).  Our nurse walked in and said "hello, babies!"  I didnt think anything of it.  We saw/heard a heartbeat.  It was so wonderful.  Our nurse then said, "ok, let me try to get this one up here.." to which I replied... "wait... are there TWO babies?!"  Last week, we only saw one (at least, that is what we were told).  And she replied with, "Yes there are two... I thought you knew that?!"

Um. No.  No one told us.  I am thrilled to be having twins after two years of IF (and regardless of the IF, we are just happy to be having two!) and we knew that two was a possibility since we transferred two embryos, but it seems as though they knew we were having two and didnt tell us....

Just a little annoyed and needed to vent.  I love our nurse but I was just aggravated and she said "I thought you knew that?!" when the only way we would have known that was if they had told us.

End vent.  I'm guessing this hasnt really happened to anyone else?

  • Congrats on the babies! But just out of curiosity how in the world did they get a heart beat at 5.5 weeks? 9 times out of 10 a fetal pole cant even be seen that early let alone hear HB. It should just be a yolk sac and gestational sac visible. Im slightly confused.

  • I found out about my girls in a similar way. I was in too much shock to care (we did IUI and were told by our doctor we only had one mature follie).  The U/S tech actually told us - my guess is she sees so many pregnant women a day that it's just old hat to her.  After I thought about it for a few days I was upset a bit - but she has since turned into one of my favorite people at the practice.  She's just very 'matter of fact' - and to her, twins were twins, no need for a big parade.

Our first US was at 5w4d and we saw both hearts beating.... Definitely didn't hear them tho.

In the grand scheme of things I'd focus on the good news and let go of the annoyance about this situation. Congrats!
This and yes, this happened to us too. Except that I didn't intro here with annoyance.

  • Same thing happened to us. We had bleeding over the weekend and the scheduled a ultra sound on a Monday. Went in and u/s tech asked how I was feeling and I said fine minus the slight cramps and then she said well no worries the babies look great. To which the face me and my husband gave must have been priceless because she said oh you didn't know and turned the screen so we could see the pic in my signature! It was amazing to see we were having twins but not the way we wanted to find out so I totally understand your frustration. There will be other amazing ultra sounds to come like the gender! I will be telling my tech each time what I know and don't want to know(like gender) each time they come near my stomach from now on lol!!
