STM Dumb It Down For Me

Ok, I know this may sound like a dumb question, but how do you wash your baby bottles?  Do you pop them in the dishwasher? Or, let them soak?

Also, same goes with the breast pump.

And, how often for each?  I would assume everyday, but that would be crazy right?

Thanks!

  • I washed my pump horns/parts every night at first, then got extra parts so I could wash them every few days. I soaked them in hot soapy water when I got home from work and put everything but the rubber flap parts in with the load of dishes.

Bottles I rinsed and used a bottle brush on and also threw them in the dishwasher.

  • I don't know anything about breast pumps, but for the bottles I put them all in the dishwasher. I also got this contraption https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Deluxe-Dishwasher-Basket-Colors/dp/B000RI8Y30/  to put the nipples and such in. And I used the Playtex drop ins with DD, so I didn't have to wash the bottles as often, because after each feeding I would just use a new liner. I washed the nipples more often than the bottles of course since she was actually sucking on those.
  • Oh and another tip is your hands will probably get chapped from washing so much. Washing hands at first when baby is small often coupled with washing the bottles and pump parts. My hands got so dry and sore. I'm not usually a big lotion user but I had to use it to keep my hands from aching.

  • I exclusively pumped so I had 3 sets of parts for my pump. I rinsed my parts every time I used them and popped them in a medela sanitizing bag. Then, I would run them through soapy water every night. I would also boil them once a week for good measure. Most likely I went a little overboard, but I never got thrush or any other infections.
For bottles, I used drop ins for a while but when I switched to ventaire, I just popped them in the dishwasher on a wash and sanitize setting. I also had a dishwasher basket for the small parts.

  • I do both with the bottles.  If I'm about to run a load in the diswhasher they go there.  If not they soak in hot water with soap, get scrubbed, lay out to dry.

Breast pump parts it's the same thing.

  • DS was in NICU, so I was in the habit of hand washing and then sterilizing.

When he got home though, and I got comfortable everything went into the D/W.

  • I washed everything in the dishwasher and then put it in the sterilizer once a week. Just be careful what else is in the dishwasher with them. My husband did a load of bottles in with some nasty spaghetti plates and the bottles all took a gross red hue for awhile!
As far as the pump if you are going to pump at least once a day buy extra parts! It will seriously save your sanity. You will feel like you are always washing bottles and pump parts!

  • I washed the pump parts and bottles by hand every night. I don't like putting plastic in the dishwasher, so only the glass bottles went into the dishwasher. I only sanitized them once before the first use.

For the pump parts, I pumped 3 times a day at work and did not wash after each time. I just wiped them off and threw everything into the cooler bag with the bottles. Then they got washed that night.
