Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Cereal

My 5 month old daughter just started cereal this past week and my dr said start at a teaspoon once in the am and once in the pm and increasing every few days to get her to a max of 3-5 tablespoons twice a day. On average what amounts and how often does everyone's babies eat cereal?

Re: Cereal

  • We're skipping cereal. There's really no point/nutrition in it (especially rice). We started with avocado. DS1 started with avocado and moved onto orange veg, then some fruits & green veg. We didn't do two meals a day with him till probably 7/7.5 months. Our pedi basically said to add a meal a month and be at 3 solid meals around 9 months, which is what we did.

  • Thanks! It's so funny how everyone's pedi is so different on their recommendations lol
  • no cereal here either.  I do put regular cooked oatmeal in the food processor to add to his fruit or vegie (what ever I am giving him) to thicken it up.
Our LO is almost 5 months old so I am just following his lead at this point as to how much he wants to eat.  So far I am just feeding him once a day which is usually in the evening.

  • Also pretty much skipped cereal as DD wasn't crazy about it. She's getting fruits snd veggies once a day and loves everything she eats (except cereal!).
  • My lo is 5 months and eats a tablespoon of cereal with enough bm to make is soupy. I add applesauce to it. She doesn't like it very much just plain. I am also giving her pureed fruits and veggis. She only eats solid food or cereal once a day.

    New Mommy!!!

  • my dd eats cereal at night after her last bottle.  we started with just a tablespoon or 2 but now she is eating much more. She loves it. I tried oatmeal but she wasn't a fan of it and it gave her bad gas. It helped her start to sleep through the night.  The dr said that the bottle was the most important but the cereal would help her sleep.  She started at 4mo.  She goes to the dr in a few days and will start veggies and stuff.  I do give her a few nibbles of things now and then but am waiting to go to the dr to really start the yummy stuff.
