STM: Crib Mattress Question..

How do you decide what type of mattress to get for the crib? When I pick out a mattress test them out, but how do you decide what is best for LO? There are a ton of brands all with varying degrees of "firmness" and "softness". STM's how did you decide what to go with? Also approx how much did you spend? The prices vary so much but I wonder if spending the big bucks for a mattress is worth it?
TIA

Re: STM: Crib Mattress Question..

  • We went with what was cheapest but had springs and seemed stiff. We ended up with a Serta mattress from Walmart.com and spent about 80$.

DS slept on it from Day 1 and transitioned him to a twin bed at 20 months. He slept great and the mattress held up great even after he used his crib as a trampoline all day.

  • We just ordered this one - it's inexpensive and has nearly 600 almost entirely positive reviews on Amazon.
this is the one on my registry - solely based on amazon reviews.

  • DH was a little obsessive wanting to squeeze them all but we ended up with a Serta as well and spent like $70 on it at BRU.

  • I went for something organic and as light as I could find - ended up being a soy mattress.  I didn't want to have to heave a heavy mattress around in the middle of the night for sheet changes.  And I went with organic because I didn't want to take any chances with the off-gases produced from the standard mattress.

  • We went with a basic (munchkin i think?) one from target. I begged DH for the more expensive and he said no. DD used it from 3 months to 2 yo and slept fine and we never had a problem with it. I did put 2 matress covers on it. One that zipped close and completely enclosed it the other was a slightly cushioned matress protector. So in the long run I am glad we didn't go with the more expensive one.

Haven't used it yet obviously, but this is the one we have, too. It was just delivered on Friday. Seems to be pretty well made and it was very lightweight - even with my big ol' belly I was able to put the mattress pad and sheet on it and get it into the crib easily, which was why I picked it.

I didn't want one of the two sided ones (seemed like a recipe for confusion during a 2am sheet change trying to remember which side of the mattress is for infant vs toddler) and my 10lb baby surely doesn't need an innerspring mattress - it'll just make it heavier when I'm trying to change the sheets. We'll upgrade to a nicer one with coils once LO is bigger.

The second time I just bought the cheap one from walmart.

  • We have the organic Serta from BRU. We were more concerned with toxins than softness. We did get a pretty comfy mattress pad, which keeps the crib firm, but a little softer.

  • Thanks for all the good info ladies!
  • We got a Simmons one from Babies R us for DD and she still uses it now in her toddler bed.  It's held up really well.   We got a Serta from Babies R us for this baby.   It was middle of the road cost wise and I'm sure it will do the job.

  • It was important to us to get an organic one, to avoid off-gassing.  If you look at organic ones, its important to note that some say "organic," but the just refer to organic cotton, and they still include all the toxins.  We went with Naturepedic, which has held up wonderfully, although it is heavy!

Toxins? Not trying to be snarky but DS1 had a non-organic mattress from birth until about 3, he has no ill effects from his mattress. Organic sounds like a gimmick to me. IMHO.

Everyone has different priorities and things that they focus on--that's why I said that it was important to me.  But organic mattresses aren't "gimmicks"-- it is a fact that most crib mattresses include toxins.  It is mandatory that they use flame retardants, and only certain brands use non-chemical flame retardants like wool.  Flame retardants are also mandatory in furniture and loose fitting pajamas. I'm not saying that flame retardants automatically cause "ill effects," but we don't know anything about most of these chemicals, and that is not something I wanted my child sleeping on.  I was just letting people know that if it is something that they wanted to invest in, don't just rely on the word "organic," since that can often mean just organic cotton on top of chemical flame retardants.

Just wondering, but does anyone else roll their eyes when people use the old "my kid did it THiS way and turned out fine..." Argument?

Does this ever reassure any mama or convince of a particular position?!? Especially on Internet forum!?
  • When I was preparing myself for my first son I remember studying how environmental toxins affect babies. There were quite a few cases that involved baby health issues that were linked to nursery furniture toxins. They are no joke. Not to say all babies are that sensitive to it, but toxins add up. I take the better safe than sorry route whenever possible, and it is more expensive, unfortunately. At least I feel like I am making decisions that are right for me and my family. I say, to each their own!
