NuvaRing and Breastfeeding

My LO is now 7 weeks old and I have been exclusively breastfeeding. I just got the OK from my doctor to start my birth control method that I chose, NuvaRing. First time ever using this. I asked her if it would affect my supply and she said it shouldn't since mine is now well established, but as I am looking up information on it, a lot of moms seemed to lose their supply. Are there any moms out there that are breastfeeding while on NuvaRing? I am nervous to start birth control at all right now as I don't want the hormone changes to affect my LO with the breastfeeding. I am planning on stopping after 6 months, depending on how things are going with getting back to work and such. Should I just wait? Any pointers are greatly appreciated!

Re: NuvaRing and Breastfeeding

  • I am a major milk machine.  When I was EP-ing for my son, I would pump about 20oz each session.  My supply took a huge hit with the Ring.   What happens to me, doesn't mean it will happen to you, but you asked.

  • Any birth control with Estrogen will affect your supply.  I am on a minipill (progestin only) so that it will not deplete my milk supply.  The only catch with the minipill is that it only blocks ovulation for 24 hours so it MUST be taken at the same exact time every day.

  • WOW! 20 oz?? I wish I could do that! I am happy when out of one pumping session I get 5 oz! I think I will be better off holding off on starting birth control until after I'm done breastfeeding. The last thing I need is for my supply to decrease. I am already expecting a decrease when I return to work in 3 weeks so I can only imagine what both things would do...
  • This is from the Nuvaring website:

Do not breastfeed while using NuvaRing. Some of the medicine may pass through the milk to the baby and could cause yellowing of the skin (jaundice) and breast enlargement in your baby. NuvaRing could also decrease the amount and quality of your breast milk.

  • I was told Nuvaring is a no go with breastfeeding
  • OMG! Thankfully I haven't started it and I am definitely going to wait until I am done with nursing. Thank you ladies! Why is my doctor telling me its perfectly fine if it isn't? That doesn't make me feel good at all! :(
  • Just a lurker. My OB prescribed me the nuvaring at my 2 week PP appointment. I was very concerned about it hurting my supply. But my OB told me that if my supply was established nothing would happen. And that the hormones wouldn't pass through my milk. Within two days my supply took a huge hit. I stopped the NuvaRing and after 3 weeks I was still unable to get my supply back to where it was. Also my daughter's pediatrician could not believe the OB gave me the OK to take the NuvaRing. I would really reconsider using the nuvaring while breastfeeding.

  • Thank you! I am definitely not going to use it. I am going to wait until I am completely done nursing (which won't be for a while). Were you ever able to get your supply back up? It really stinks when you ask your doctor all the right questions and your told one thing, just to find out another...
  • No my supply never came back. I tried everything a lactation consultant suggested but it didn't really help. So with going back to work and barely making enough to get her through the day my husband and I decided to switch to formula. And to switch doctors as well.
