Sizing question for twins (clothes)

We are due in March, so will have them in the beginning of Feb.  I live in Iowa and so the seasons dramatically change.  We are trying to buy clothes and I'm just wondering what to expect.  I know I could have 7lb twins, but know the average is around 5lb, and then obviously could even be premie.  Would you recommend not trying to buy for the summer (but everything is on clearance!) or would you say stick with 3-6m?  6-9m?  What size were your twins in at their respective ages? Were they pretty much in line with the clothing sizes?

I'm assuming even premie babies "catch up" within the first year?

TIA!

Re: Sizing question for twins (clothes)

  • Mine were both just 5lbs when they came home and we never used preemie size.  Started off with newborn which they used until about 4 months old and then we went up in to 3-6 months.

They are now about to be 9 months old and can already wear 12 month onesies and they are just over 20lbs.

    Congrats and good luck!

  • Thanks!! That's what I thought.  I figured they'd be in newborn for a little longer than normal but it that wouldn't stay with them forever -- :)  I know they usually catch up, just didn't know how long it takes on average.

  • My guys were born at 36w 4d and weighed 5lb 12 oz and 7lb 2 oz. When they were first born I wished I had 1 or 2 premie outfits for the little guy. Their comig home outfits were Newborn sized and he was drowning in it. They wore newborn until about 2 months and now at 4 months both are comfortably in 3-6 months clothes. Before they were born, I bought clothes based on their due date (due in early June so expected them to be in 3-6 mos in Sept) and it seems to be working out pretty well.

    6 year old daughter

Fraternal boys born on May 11, 2013 at 36 weeks 4 days

  • Mine we about 5lbs at birth too (35w6d).  They were too long for preemie, so we started with newborn.  They were in those for a couple months, 0-3 for a couple months, then switched to 3-6 at 4 months old. The are coming up on 6 months, and they are definitiely starting to outgrow some of the 3-6 sizes already.  So, I expect we'll move into 6-9 right at 6 months.  By 2 months they were in the 40th percentile for growth, and by 4 months, 50th.  So they caught up.  If you want to buy summer stuff now, go for it, I'd just plan to buy for the age at time of wearing.  If you think there will be an overlap with cooler weather, just add some little hoodies, or some pants that could match what you buy so things will be more versatile.  With a boy, this will be pretty easy.  They have lots of good mix and match stuff.  Girls, not as easy.  Everything really cute is an outfit.  You could stock up on staples instead, like sleep n plays, white onesies... the stuff people don't tend to buy as it isn't as cute.  A note on the onesies, get the sleeveless ones for your girlie, the other side effect of cute girls clothing is everything is sleeveless or has short, short cap sleeves.  Plus those are a million times easier to get over baby's head that the traditional onesies.

  • Thanks for the tip!! That's a great idea to get some hoodies that will just match with stuff!

  • Mine were 6 lb 8 oz and 5 lb 3 oz, born 12/27, and were in newborn sizes for the first couple months (and in a couple preemie sleepers too). They seemed to be in 3-6 month forever, and this size would probably still fit my littler guy, but I had them both in 6-9 months at around 8 months. They have not grown through sizes as fast as I anticipated, but I think it all has to do with the babies (N is really tiny, for instance, so L always breaks in the new size first) and with the brand of clothes (I have a lot of Carters, which seem to run big). Ditto PPs about layering; you can never go wrong with lots of short-sleeved onesies, lightweight sleepers etc.

  • What I can remember- my guys were born in November- 34 weekers at a little over 5lbs each.  They seemed to wear newborn for quite awhile- by summer- they were 6 months old in May- they could wear 6 months stuff- but it was getting too small so I bought mostly 9 months. Which took them thru the summer comfortably.  My guys caught up quickly with their peers height/weight wise.
  • It really varies. K was 7lbs 8oz at birth and at two months was in the 90th percentile for weight and wearing 3-6 month clothes. A was 5lbs 9oz at birth and at two months was in the 25th percentile for weight. She still wears 0-3 month clothes. She can wear 3-6 month but they are pretty baggy on her. I have a ton of matching outfits in the same sizes so A ends up wearing size 3-6 month clothes a lot anyway. K grew out of newborn sized clothes a lot faster than A did.

Surprise! Baby #4 is due in March!
  • It's always a guessing game when buying ahead!  My 35w5d twins were born at 5lb8oz each.  At their 1 month appt. they were both just over 7lbs and in the 5-10th percentile.  At 2 months, my son just took off.  He was wearing 6 months clothes at 4 months, 12 month clothes at 10 months etc.  My daughter has always been true to size I guess?  At 6 months she was just getting into 6 month clothes, she started wearing 12 month at their 1st birthday etc.   They are 15 months now and my son seems to be slowing down a bit.  I bought a few summer things in 18 months thinking that he would outgrow the 12 month clothes by August and he really could have stayed in the 12 month thru the summer.  My suggestion is also that you can't go wrong in the beginning with a couple of extra sleepers and onesies, etc. I made sure that they had properly fitting pjs in the beginning tho.  It made me nervous if there was too much fabric around their mouths while I was trying to get some sleep at night.

Btw, this totally applies to diapers too!  It didn't cross my mind that I would be buying 2 different sized diapers for 2 babies born the same day!  Meanwhile my neighbor has 2 kids that are 18 months apart and wear the same size.  Crazy!

    B/G twins born 5/12

  • My girls were born full term at 40 weeks and were almost 7lbs each however were tiny and wore NB/0-3 clothes for about 3-4 mos before moving to 3 mos clothing.  However now at 10 mos they are catching up and moving into 9-12 mos and 12-18 mos size.  It's hard to predict.

We welcomed our girls on 11.7.12 @ 40w0d!
Emerson Lily 6 lbs 13 oz & Ellis Willow 6 lbs 9 oz

  • I'm running into a bit of poor planning myself at the moment. My first was born in April amd weighed 6lbs and moved through the sizes according to his age.

The twins were 5 and 5.8 and born in late June, so I was crossing my fingers that I could reuse the same clothes for the boys. They're still in NB at almost 3 mo, so I'm going to have to go out and buy some 0-3 pants and hoodies to get us through fall.

Bottom line is you can never go wrong w sleepers and onesies. The rest you can buy according to season.

  • Oh a note on sizing - keep in mind that 3 mos sizes are really 0-3 months, 6 mos is 3-6 months, etc.  I wasted a lot of clothes from my first figuring that one out!
