I personally would NOT get a travel system. Get a "Snap n Go" stroller frame instead (and buy it used on Craigslist! They don't take much wear n tear and you can easily get one for less than $50). I had a travel system with my first and it was fine but the strollers are usually just way too bulky to use for a quick trip into a store or restaurant. I ended up selling my travel system on Craigslist soon after he outgrew the infant seat. I wanted a slimmer stroller and went with the Baby Jogger City Mini. You can buy a carseat adaptor with this stroller but honestly, I don't think you'll use it as much as you would use a stroller frame. Think about it... it's just not practical to push a whole stroller/infant seat into a restaurant to sit next to the table while you eat dinner. But a snap n go isn't much bigger than one of those slings that most restaurants have for infant seats. Just for comparison, look at these pics to compare bulkiness.
After consulting with other moms I know, we skipped the travel system. We did the Safety 1st Clic It SnG with the onBoard 35 air and I'm using the set again with DS2 to get us all in daycare in the mornings with 2 under 2. I know it's not the most popular choice but the Clic it has an amazing basket that fits tons of stuff which works out great for daycare when your toting in diapers and supplies.
For DS1 we later got an Uppababy G-Luxe as our everyday stroller.
My advice is to try out carseats and then get the SnG that works with it.

I have an uppa baby vista stroller that I never use for errands. Yes, I have the car seat adapter but it is a major pain to fold and carry that stroller. Seriously, I was avoiding during errands because of it. I got a chicco key fit caddy which is just like the snap and go but tailor made for the chicco car seat. My life has changed! It is so easy to fold and stash in the trunk, making errands with LO a breeze. I completely feel like I wasted 700 plus dollars on the UBV because I rarely use it. When LO out grows the snap and go, we'll be getting an umbrella stroller.

Chicco Nuevo travel system. As a FTM I had your same dilemma, but when I heard this new travel system just came out I was sold. It includes the top rated Keyfit car seat with a lightweight stroller. It's a sort of compromise between the bulky system and the little stroller frames. Go take a look at BRU or target Good luck!
I'm not a fan of the traditional travel system strollers, they're really not great. And I agree with LauraT about the snap and go, what a flimsy PITA.

I'd look at those seats and find a stroller you like that fits one of them.
Not recommended because they often have too high of bottom harness slots for newborns are the Graco Snugride 22 (the others are fine) and the Baby Trend Flexloc.
